THE HEALING BUTTERFLY
Google Voice-VS-iMessage
iPhone has one feature I can’t stand, while Google Voice has lots I love!
iPhone’s “The Green/The Blue” & The “3 Little Dots”
play mind games.
I’m pretty sure we all have heard by now that there’s this thing that iPhone has with its text feature. If you’re talking to another fellow iPhone user your chat feature will be blue. If they are an Android user, they are green.
I show up as Green, but I’m really a Blue.
Back when I finally switched to an iPhone from Android about 5 or 6 years ago, I was looking forward to having those little dots for texting and being “A Blue Person”.
Maybe I just wanted an iPhone really badly for a really long time. That’s definitely the case.
There was this status to it and when you’re talking to another iPhone user, they know you have one too-you’re “Blue”. Maybe it’s a little cult-y, but it is a thing. I found that the idea is better than reality. At least for me.
Also — I could care less what color I am. While there’s lots of cool features to iPhones, I have one main reason for having it. Pictures. Being a photo-art-freak; I’m almost 99% in it for the camera and the photo editing apps that are only iPhone compatible. It’s truly amazing what the iPhone camera can do-especially with a Macro Lens.

Back to the texting —
First of all, the chat bubble or whatever the technical term is for those 3 dots-they are little twisted mind game dots.
Making you watch them dance around while someone is texting-stop, start, stop, start, stop and if they just STOP with no message, one is left to wonder “what the heck is going on over there.”
Those 3 dots bugged me more as the sender.
I found them very obtrusive when you’re the typing. Making all of those stops and starts before eventually sending the message. The entire time I would wonder if the other person is watching that. Urgh. What is this some watered down version of ICQ? That back in the day chat program. At least with “I Seek You” you would actually see the words come through as they were typing. No mystery as to what they are saying/thinking.
While you could always backspace, it was already said and for the most part you just couldn’t edit or censor yourself like regular chat or text — which I liked a lot actually. It made it more like real talking, less censoring.
But with the dots-it’s the anticipation or the wondering if you’re being seen or not. Texting is such a mind game in its own right, much less adding up these weird details that change it somehow.
You can’t work out your text without the person seeing you and it’s pressure AND-it’s creepy. There, I said it.
I felt like it was this weird window into my doings before I actually did.
Just now looking up what the feature is called, my search is flooded with questions about “the typing awareness indicator” (so that’s what it’s called) and how to get it to go away.
Apparently this has been a point of contention and anxiety since 2014 when the feature first appeared. Not surprised. BTW, you cannot make it go away.
Moving On
I don’t know how long I stuck with the text program before I put everyone on my Google Voice number, and it wasn’t just about the dots. I totally could have dealt with it if it wasn’t for the fact that I had already been using Google Voice, and just decided to integrate it across the board. Why deal with two numbers, the dots from hell AND Google Voice?
So, for a long time it’s been 100%…

Google Voice
First of all, it’s free. Let’s just start there. There’s a way to load money and pay for stuff, but I’m pretty sure that’s for international calling. It really does everything I need for free.
On iPhones you show up as “Green” because when you use Google Voice you get a completely different phone number than your actual number of your cell phone. Essentially having two mobile numbers. You can use both, like I mentioned-the native and the Google Voice or just give out your Google Voice number.
You don’t get some random number either-you get to pick from a massive list of area codes, and even put in combination of numbers to see if they have what you want available.
Your account is connected to your Gmail, which if you use their business enterprise client-it fits together nicely. Connect all of your phones to it-home, cell, office, wherever. and can ring to all of them at the same time when you get a call. Very convenient.
To use the program, you have two options: Desktop and Mobile. I love how you can use the desktop to type your text messages, as well as the app for your phone and you set up calls from your desktop as well to ring you at whatever number you want to call someone from.
For example — I live in the mountains and my mobile reception sucks. I always use WiFi on my phone. For all of my phone calls I use my landline. When someone calls my work number, it rings my landline and my mobile so if I was out, I could just answer my mobile.
If I want to call from my home LINE but use my Google Number, I have to go to the desktop, input the number I want to call, click GO and then it calls my home phone, once I pick up the phone, it rings the person I’m calling. Easy-peasy.
You can call directly from your mobile using the app, but like I said when I’m home I don’t use it and it doesn’t have the feature on the mobile app to select another phone to call from. Which I guess makes sense, but it would still be nice to have the option.
Another cool feature if you use it exclusively — if I just get a call to my home or my mobile — I know it’s not a real call since all of my calls ring to both numbers.
It even records calls if you want. I don’t usually choose to record calls. Although one thing that Google Voice has done randomly is to records in the middle of conversations-and it announces it- “Now recording call” when I haven’t done it. A bit awkward. No one ever cares.
Aside from that silly hiccup — it’s a super cool application, especially if you have your own business and want to keep things private…And don’t want to have those obnoxious little dots in your face all of the time!
