I Tried 1–4–1 Method For Goal Setting, Here’s What I Learned

Simplify, Prioritize, Achieve

Photo by Alex Nemo Hanse on Unsplash

Do you sometimes feel sleepwalking through life without any real idea of what you want?

Maybe you may know exactly what you want to achieve.

But you have no idea how to get there.

Setting goals is easy.

Achieving them is hard.

Why?

I will certainly not answer this question in this post.

It’s a complete explanation.

It may never be possible to answer why achieving a goal or changing old habits is difficult.

Setting ourselves goals gives us a roadmap of where we are heading.

The more effectively we make the plan, the greater our chances of achieving what we set out to do.

Rick McDaniel quoted,

“Goal-setters see future possibilities and the big picture.”

Through this quote, Rick highlights the mindset of goal-setters.

He emphasizes their ability to imagine future possibilities and grasp the big picture.

Goal setters are proactive people.

They actively define and pursue goals.

They believe in their ability to shape the future.

This mindset includes strategic thinking, effective planning, and focusing on long-term goals.

Understanding the 1–4–1 Method

I was encouraged by this wonderful method for goal-setting while reading the book, “Think Like a Monk.”

The 1–4–1 method is Jay Shetty’s unique approach to planning and goal setting.

It can serve as a framework to bring clarity, focus, and purpose to our lives.

It’s a three-step process that can help us master the complexity of life with purpose.

1. One Skill

The first step is to recognize and develop an ability.

A skill that aligns with your passions and long-term goals.

This can be anything.

You might want to learn a new language.

Learn cooking, dancing, or sports activities.

Learn a professional skill relevant to your desired career.

I chose writing, for example.

I take time every day to improve my writing skills.

I have noticed a positive change not only in my skills but also in my attitude.

This is the first step in creating a foundation for personal growth.

2. Four Pillars

The second element of the 1–4–1 method is based on four pillars.

They are health, love, learning, and productivity.

These pillars serve as cornerstones for a balanced and purposeful life.

We can develop a holistic approach to our wellbeing by focusing on these aspects.

Health

Prioritize your physical and mental health.

Be it through regular sport, a balanced diet, or mindfulness exercises.

Make conscious decisions that contribute to your general well-being.

Love

Develop meaningful relationships in your life.

Invest time and energy in the people who are most important to you.

Develop a supportive network that promotes your personal and emotional growth.

Learning

Adopt an attitude of continuous learning.

Seek knowledge and experiences that broaden your horizons.

This pillar is to remind you that growth is a lifelong journey.

Every day is an opportunity to learn something new.

Productivity

Manage your time and energy efficiently.

Determine your priorities and focus on tasks that align with your goals.

This pillar encourages a proactive approach to productivity.

It ensures that your efforts lead to meaningful results.

3. One Service

Dedicate time to serving others.

Kind deeds contribute to the well-being of those around us.

Selfless activities give our lives a deep sense of fulfillment and meaning.

This could be volunteering with a local charity.

Offer food or blankets to homeless people on the street.

Help your neighbor who may be in need.

Or simply lend a sympathetic ear to a friend.

A service-oriented mindset can create a positive ripple effect in our communities.

How to implement the 1–4–1 method?

Jas says that you will achieve wonderful results after using this method.

It will become easier to explore your passion and find your purpose.

You will recognize the area in which you want to excel.

You will discover a sense of fulfillment beyond the act of working.

1. Start small

Begin by identifying a skill that aligns with your passions.

It doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking.

Even small, consistent efforts can lead to significant growth over time.

The key is consistency and dedication.

2. Define your pillars

Take a moment to reflect on the four pillars; health, love, learning, and productivity.

Define what each of these pillars means to you personally.

Set specific, achievable goals for each pillar.

Balance is key.

3. Integrate acts of service

Integrate acts of serving others into your routine.

This can range from volunteering to helping a friend or colleague.

The goal is to cultivate an attitude of generosity and compassion.

4. Reflect and Adjust

Check your progress regularly.

Adjust your approach if necessary.

Life is unpredictable and your goals and priorities can change.

Be open to re-evaluating and fine-tuning your path based on your experiences and insights.

Final thoughts

The 1–4–1 method serves as a roadmap that leads us to a more conscious and purposeful life.

The beauty of this approach lies in its simplicity and adaptability.

It’s not a rigid set of rules, but a framework that can be tailored to our individual aspirations and circumstances.

You can unleash your potential and create a life full of meaning and fulfillment.

Embrace the process, and celebrate the small victories.
