I took an extra 1000mg of Vitamin C for 30 days
When a wise move gets you more than what you’ve bargained for

The events of 2023 took their toll on me.
After losing my best friend, the love of my life, and my soulmate in February, the days were filled with constant echoes of her absence. Trying to adjust to life without her shifted my focus entirely. Initially, I tried to keep up with our daily habits and walks, but the emptiness that stretched out before me each morning robbed me of my will and energy.
The daily walks got shorter and shorter, and the mornings when she would attentively watch me attempt the downward dog, despite my stiff back, became a distant memory.

After she passed, I simply didn’t have the will, energy, or interest in doing anything that used to make me happy.
The death of a close friend or companion can affect people in different ways. Some manage to keep it together while others, like myself, tend to withdraw and immerse themselves in memories, making it difficult to move on. Either way, it’s a very personal journey.

Whether it was the daily dose of sobbing, or reduced attempts to take better care of my health, I ended up fighting one virus after another.
The peak came in October when I fought a bladder infection, chest infection, tonsilitis, and ear infection all in one go. On top of that, I woke up one morning and noticed a strange mark on my breast. The dreaded C entered my mind as it became clear that my body was crying out for help.

After a series of tests, I was given the ‘all-clear’.
The experience was a great reminder of just how fragile life is.
I’ve always looked after my health. I don’t drink or smoke, I’m vegan (not that it makes any difference), and don’t indulge in junk food.
Yet, I knew something was wrong.
I’m also not someone who takes supplements as I believe I get everything out of my diet. Or at least I have been for the past 40 years.

Long story short, after my mini wake-up call in October, I decided to reach for a supplement.
Curiosity led me to embark on a 30-day experiment where I took an extra 1000mg of Vitamin C daily. Little did I know that this seemingly wise move would unfold into a surprising journey of discovery.
After doing my research, I started taking Vitamin C in the form of a chewable tablet. Nothing too fancy, supermarket's own brand. The box stated I could take up to 4 a day, making it a total of 1000mg.
I started slowly and built up my dose from one chewy tablet (250mg) to four tablets (1000mg) a day over two weeks.

The power of Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is best known for its immune-boosting properties and antioxidant benefits. It plays a crucial role in collagen production, aids in the absorption of iron, and helps maintain healthy skin. It’s a water-soluble vitamin, meaning it does not store in the body. While the recommended daily intake for adults is around 75–90mg, the idea of being able to take up to 2000mg of Vitamin C a day intrigued me.

The experiment begins
Surprising Energy Boost — Within the first week, I noticed a surge in energy levels. Fatigue that often lingered in the afternoons seemed to dissipate, and I found myself more alert and focused.
Glowing Skin — As the days progressed, a noticeable change appeared in my skin. My complexion became more radiant, and I noticed a slight fading in the dark spots under my eyes.
Healthy Hair — I made a drastic change to my hair in August by going from bleach blonde to brunette. Unfortunately, the process of adding a red dye and then the brunette tone damaged my hair. It appeared frizzy and lifeless, and I was afraid to use a straightener on it as it kept breaking off. However, after taking a daily dose of 1000mg of Vitamin C for just two weeks, I noticed a significant improvement. My hair started to grow, the frizziness disappeared, and it had a healthy shine to it. My hair grew about 4cm in just one month.

Unexpected side effects
Health publications mention a few side effects of taking higher doses of Vitamin C.
In my case, the only side effect I observed was breakouts. Although my skin was glowing, it became spotty and I resembled my 16-year-old self (I used to have acne).

Should you opt for an extra dose of Vitamin C?
In the field of health and wellness, experimenting with different supplements can sometimes lead to unexpected results.
Through my own 30-day experience with taking an extra dose of Vitamin C, I was reminded that making informed decisions regarding my health is very important. Especially in times when I forget about self-care and prioritize other things.
If you’re thinking about giving this experiment a try, remember, that it’s crucial to consult with your healthcare professional before starting any supplement regimen. This is to ensure it aligns with your individual needs and health conditions.
Although my journey began with an additional 1000mg of Vitamin C, it ultimately resulted in a newfound appreciation for my body and health.
Where I am today?
After my 30-day trial, I slowly reduced my dose back to 250mg a day. I can still feel the benefits, but the acne has cleared up. My hair is growing and is looking healthier than ever.
