I Took A Chance And Submitted A Story To Some Contests
About time I spread my wings
Nervous is an understatement. I did something I never thought I’d do, and I’m not expecting anything from it. I put my writing in two writing contests.
I don’t post it much here, but I dabble in fiction. In a perfect world, I’d be doing bestselling writing and traveling the world on a whim. But life doesn’t work that way. Not yet, anyway.
Even if I don’t win either competition, I can get some new eyes on my work. And that’s a plus, right?
I’m Taking Stephen King’s Advice
I know what you’re thinking. What the hell does Stephen King have to do with writing contests?
My book of the week is Stephen King’s On Writing. I haven’t finished it yet, but I have already got something out of it. King explains how writers have a toolbox, and we need to take time to take the rust off those tools.
One of the other things he says is how bad writing often comes from fear. He’s got a point. Fear is why I stuck to one website instead of putting myself out there and trying other platforms. Fear is what’s keeping me from attempting writing contests. Fear and lack of funds keep me from making paid submissions.
After reading that part, I decided to say, “Fuck fear!” and submit a story.
And Now, The Wait
Part of why I hesitated in submitting to other publications is the waiting. Platforms like Medium give instant gratification, but it doesn’t teach new writers the power of patience.
But I need to be realistic if I want to make a career out of writing. Stephen King submitted his stories to different places before Carrie made him famous. His first published stories didn’t pay enough for him to quit his day job either. It won’t be different for me.
Am I expecting to win? No. Am I expecting a response? No. Am I expecting a confidence boost? Yes.
Fuck fear! Let’s see what happens!
