I Took A $10,000 Pay Cut And Became Richer

Over a year ago, I took a $10,000 pay cut but unexpectedly became richer. I mean this both literally and metaphorically.
The pay cut was by choice; I made the decision to demote myself. I moved into a job where I would experience less stress, enjoy better work-life balance, and feel happy. It was perfect, with the added bonus of an office with a window, but I had to take a pay cut of approximately $10,000.
In the months that followed, I realized that because of this pay cut, I wanted to improve my financial well-being. So I delved deep into personal finance and became completely obsessed with it.
By learning how to maximize my non-W2 income and being creative with my savings strategies, I ended up richer than before the pay reduction.
Here is a breakdown of my strategies:
Budget: I cut out impulse spending and unnecessary, unused subscriptions. I tracked every single dollar I spent.
Bills: I lowered my bills simply by asking for discounts from my service providers. What is the lowest rate available? Do you offer a loyalty discount?
Portfolio: I diversified my portfolio by investing in index funds, earned more interest with high yield savings accounts, and doubled-down on my tax-advantaged accounts. I maxed out my retirement accounts.
Time: I shortened my commute by miles and days by moving to a job with more work from home options. I increased my sleep and nap times which improved my mood and happiness as well as my ability to make sound financial decisions.
I metaphorically became richer in that my mindset went from that of scarcity to that of abundance. I felt an abundance of peace and space in my mind and my environment. I left a toxic work environment filled with daily anger and annoyance to one filled with calm, relaxation, and kindness.
I took a pay cut of $10,000 yet increased my net worth and my happiness in just 15 months’ time. Ultimately, I learned that prioritizing values, managing time and money, and adopting a positive mindset of abundance greatly affect your ability to grow your money.
