I Stopped Eating Sugar & You Should Too
Sugar is a neurotoxin that the human brain has not evolved a defense against and the food companies know it and exploit it.

The food industry is the biggest drug dealer on the planet. They fill our foods with sugar and our bodies have no defense against it.
Why Do They Put Corn & Sugar In Everything?
I went to King Soopers, Kroger to some, and all I wanted was a couple of cans of peas to make some quick and easy vegetable soup and I could not find one brand that did not have added sugar.
How many of you reading this are actually ingredient reading, informed shoppers? I hope it is a lot of you because I don’t feel like too many shoppers are.
My family has had to drastically change its eating habits due to my wife's food allergies, which we found out about this year. I’ll link that story here. I have been reluctant to give up sugar because, quite frankly, I am addicted.
As a recovered heroin addict I don’t really enjoy the idea of being dependent on another plant-based neurotoxin, which is exactly what heroin and sugar are.
And it’s not just caning sugar, it’s molasses, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, sucralose, coconut sugar, brown sugar, turbinado sugar, fructose, dextrose, maltodextrin, and so many others.
Dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup are all derived from corn, which is almost 100% GMO. Sugar is subsidized so it receives Federal money because according to the Federal Government and I quote,
“Sugar is an essential ingredient in our nation’s food supply that’s made from two different crops — sugarbeets and sugarcane — and serves a wide variety of uses when producing foods for a well-balanced diet.” U.S. Sugar Policy
Human beings have not evolved to eat sugar at the rate we do. Our brains do not have an off switch. Our brains run on sugar, but not the kinds of sugar that are processed. Our brains are not equipped to fight sugar cravings, it is the only food that we have no satiation point, you’ll just crave more.
Sugar affects the same part of the brain as cocaine and Ecstasy. So I have decided to stop eating it on my own. With all of the added sugar in all of the foods we eat, I feel good about my decision.
I don’t hate myself anymore and I wanna be around for my kids and grandkids. I’ve stopped doing drugs, drinking alcohol, and smoking cigarettes. The natural progression, for me at least, is to give up the one thing left in my life I can’t say no to.
What About Those Other Sweeteners?
Let’s take a look at the sugars they put in your food without telling you that they are sugars.
- Maltodextrin — It is very harmful to healthy gut bacteria. According to MedicalNewsToday.com
“If a person eats too many products that contain maltodextrin, their diet is likely to be high in sugar, low in fiber, and full of highly processed foods. This type of diet can increase a person’s risk of high cholesterol, weight gain, and type 2 diabetes… Maltodextrin has an even higher glycemic index (GI) than table sugar. This means that maltodextrin can cause a sharp increase, or spike, in people’s blood sugar shortly after they eat foods that contain it.”
- Sucralose — This is the main sweetener in Splenda. According to DrAxe.com sucralose was originally found while researching a new insecticide and was never intended for human consumption. It increases the risk of Type-2 diabetes, increases the risk for I.B.S. (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and Crohn’s Disease, and is found to be a cause of Leaky Gut. DrAxe.com says
“Sucralose is a chlorinated sucrose derivative. This means it’s derived from sugar and contains chlorine. Making sucralose is a multistep process that involves replacing the three hydrogen-oxygen groups of sugar with chlorine atoms. The replacement with chlorine atoms intensifies the sweetness of sucralose. Originally, sucralose was found through the development of a new insecticide compound. It was never meant to be consumed. However, it was later introduced as a “natural sugar substitute” to the masses, and people had no idea that the stuff was actually toxic.”
- High Fructose Corn Syrup — This is my least favorite of them all because of the lies and misinformation around it. When used in moderation it is a major cause of heart disease, obesity, cancer, dementia, liver failure, and more. According to DrHyman.com
“The real issues are only two.
We are consuming HFCS and sugar in pharmacologic quantities never before experienced in human history–140 pounds a year versus 20 teaspoons a year 10,000 years ago.
High fructose corn syrup is always found in very poor-quality foods that are nutritionally vacuous and filled with all sorts of other disease promoting compounds, fats, salt, chemicals, and even mercury.”
So What Should We Do?
That is completely and totally up to you. For myself and my family, we have chosen to quit eating foods with added sugars. It is not just an allergy issue for us, but a quality of life issue.
We have the ability to be the most informed shoppers in the world, yet we, as a society, fail epically. There are literally apps that you can scan the bar code and they do the work for you.
I love myself and I am worth the effort it takes to be healthy. I know my worth, it is the exact same as yours, and you are a frigging Rock Star.
So before you grab that soda or other sweetened beverage, tell yourself, “I’m Better than this” and grab a water or kombucha instead, your gut will thank me later.
I will be doing a piece on Kombucha in the near future, so stay tuned.
As always, be well…
