I Stopped Asking for Permission

Asking for permission gets burned in from an early age. So early that you don’t even realize it is happening. Primed to act a certain way as you grow up.

Every kid craves attention. Every kid hears Mom or Dad say make us proud of you. Every kid hears YOU CAN DO IT. Even if you can’t.

One way or another the kid learns to ask for approval. Learns to ask for permission. A good friend of mine graduated from the top of the class at a top law school. Everyone was SO proud. One problem. She never had any intention of practicing law. Point is, she was EXPECTED to be a lawyer.

So here it is. My personal manifesto. My true north. This thinking motivates me to achieve, to take chances, to get MY OWN result. Not a result that pleases the other person.

You don’t have to like it! I do. By the way, if you are not having any of this… you are on the way!

I stopped asking for permission

Person A’s experience is theirs.

Person B has their own stuff to worry about.

A and B have nothing to do with you and your experience past, present, or future.

What someone thinks of you is not your business.

You don’t owe ANYONE an explanation.

Decide what you want to do and do it.

Don’t underestimate your ability.

Don’t sell yourself short.

Time is precious.

Pleasing someone who doesn’t know you is a waste.

They have nothing invested in you.

They couldn’t care less anyway about you or yours.

Why chase this person’s approval?

It’s not about being liked or communicating.

It’s about USING not WASTING your talent, your personal power, and your joy.

Don’t let someone take your joy.

Decide what you are going to do and DO IT.

Don’t wait for someone to like your idea.

Don’t delay because someone doesn’t approve or doesn’t understand.

Tell someone six months later. AFTER you did it.

These are my non-negotiables.

Do it your way.

Everyone else can have a nice day!

There is an old Polish saying.

The sword of destiny has two edges.

You are one of those edges.
