I started waking up at 5:30 am and here’s what happened
You know what’s the freakiest thing for a die-hard insomniac like me? Randomly deciding to wake up at 5:30 am two days after going to sleep at 5:30 am.
Why did do I this?
I’ve been hearing podcast after podcast and blog after blog from the self-help gurus telling everyone the beauty of waking up early. I always called bullshit because waking up at 5:30 am may give you more time in your mornings, but I doubt you’d have more energy during the day.
So I gave it a try and I’ve only been trying this cycle for two weeks now and here are some things that have changed for me.
It’s a drastic change from my life at home
Whenever I’m at home, it’s fatty time.
Sugar, meat, fried Oreos, pop, cheese, and more sugar. No working out either. Who wants to pay for a membership?
Because of this constant routine, I tend to revert back to my unhealthy ways whenever I go home for a college break. I’m less motivated to eat healthier and I’m definitely lazier.
Home was always a place for me to not care about anything. I wouldn’t worry about anything around me including my health deteriorating in front of my own eyes.
So I wanted to break this cycle in college and find peace with my physical and mental health.
I can work on my business
I have enough time to give myself at least an hour to work on my freelance writing business. It’s often hard to find time as a writer to hone in on your craft and look for clients. But it’s proven to help me out tremendously given that I don’t have to worry about prospecting later.
I might even manage to scale by the business at a crazy pace if I keep going at this rate.
Growing a freelance business is tough work already and the fact that I can sit down and focus on my own writing with no distractions is a therapy for me.
My Mind is More Sharp
After I wake up at 5:30 am, I go straight to the gym and begin my one-hour workout. Then I eat breakfast in the dining hall. After that, I go back to my dorm and start studying for my classes.
Studying in the morning helps me retain more information and stay focused on the material. I can read faster and get more work done without fidgeting and taking phone breaks.
Not only am I focused on my studies, but I’m also focused on my extracurricular activities as well. I try and make sure my club meetings are in order and I can schedule out my day accordingly. I had a few scholarship applications that I needed to get done and submit and I ended up finishing them in a timely matter and not one day before the deadline.
I Eat Better
My level of health feels different now.
Ever since I started waking up at 5:30 am and working out at 6 am, I’m more conscious of my body. I feel less groggy in the morning and I’m more excited for the rest of the day.
I’m limiting my diet to only eating chicken as a source of protein. I guess you can say I’m easing into vegetarianism. Eating a more plant-based diet plays a huge part in my level of energy. My stomach doesn’t feel as heavy as it would when I finish eating. It feels as though I’m losing weight just by changing my diet.
Sometimes there are setbacks
Since going to the gym more frequently, I learned that you won’t always go as hard as you want to. You might even gain some weight back.
As I start getting in more shape I find it harder to burn off all the weight as quickly as before. I don’t weigh myself every day because of this. It makes me too self-conscious about what’s going on with my body.
Or sometimes you feel unmotivated to work out harder at the gym because you feel like something isn’t working. You’d rather just keep a slow and steady pace when you work out and watch TV on your phone rather than giving it 110%.
I’m guilty of this more than you think.
It’s about finding your rhythm and seeing what works best for you. I found that I can’t watch TV on my phone unless I take a small break and any small break I take has to be just two minutes for every twenty.
I’m still working on finding my pace but I know it will work out with consistency.
Being healthy is a very rough change for anyone that’s had an “unhealthy” lifestyle like me. I’m still not in good shape. However, in a few month's time, I’ll be happy with my health inside and out.
