MINDFULNESS

I Started Loving Boring Things To Enjoy Simple Things in My Life

Avoiding quick pleasure changed my attitude to many things in my life

I love procrastinating, as many other people do. I have TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube on my phone. In pauses between my work sessions, I often decided to take my phone for 5–15 minutes.

Recently, I found that vibrant content steals a lot of energy and makes ordinary things uninteresting. For example, you can prefer scrolling your phone instead of reading an article.

The primary analog I see in the dining sector is that people who often eat fast food like McDonald’s prefer to cook something other than regular food cooked at home. It’s not so tasty, has no amazing smell, etc.

People stopped liking boring things. After reading many materials on this topic, I found that you must love boring things to be successful at something.

I noticed that my girlfriend often lost interest in the movie and started checking her TikTok on the phone, even if the film was enjoyable. Recently, I caught myself doing the same thing.

We lose interest in long types of content and things that require thinking. Watching 10-second videos for 30 minutes is much easier than reading a book for 10 minutes.

This idea makes me feel terrible because our world goes deeper into quick pleasures.

Have you ever seen those courses, videos, and articles on becoming wealthy or successful in only two months?

Anything that leads to success needs patience and a significant amount of time.

I love to compare it with my learning of English and guitar playing. I spent years developing these skills. I continue learning English because I see places where I can improve this skill. By this time, I’ve been learning and practicing it for more than ten years!

Reading is much more boring than playing games, watching videos on YouTube, or scrolling social media. However, as soon as I started reading more instead of using social media, I felt calmer and had more energy and desire to do anything.

I noticed that the best thing about loving boring things is that if you like boring things, you like doing everything! You become interested in many things that were previously boring for you.

It would help if you focused on something other than boring books. I like reading only books that I like and articles on Medium that give me the knowledge I need.

You can pick whatever you want, but focus on the format of the content.

I like watching movies, especially perfect ones. But I have problems with series because they steal much time and energy, and I will continue until I end them all. It’s like a drug for me!

I wouldn’t say I like digital drugs in the formats of TikTok and Instagram because they steal energy and time, and I feel my life routines are boring.

I look for other things I have yet to like, but I have always been much more interested in reading, writing, drawing, and creating.

Interestingly, I became more interested in talking with people and exploring new things after this.

Recently, I found a 4-hour course on YouTube! I found it interesting but would never watch it because it’s too long. I started to love boring things, so

I decided to watch it. I did it in several sets for 40 minutes each because, anyway, after a long time, I lost focus, and my eyes needed a rest.

I am still open to social media. I can’t explain why, but some inner feeling controls my actions. Thankfully, my phone allows me to set a limit for these apps, so I can mainly control it.

Anyway, some days, I still have 3 to 4 hours of screen time, which says I’ve spent much time on this. I love writing and reading articles, so I need to spend more time with my laptop than my phone.

So, it’s just the beginning of the journey I found for myself. Many successful people give this critical advice. Start loving boring things to enjoy your work and become more creative.

I love experimenting with the knowledge I get from research and publications from entrepreneurs and productive people.

Even if you only want to find time for new hobbies, it’s also a good idea to replace things that are too interesting with boring ones!

So, the best advice for building long-term results I can share for you is the next: start loving boring things because your hobbies and things you like doing today may become boring tomorrow, so you should focus on the consistency that may bring you more results in the future if you continue your work and developing your skills to become a better person!
