I started a six-figure faceless social media business — Here’s how it happened
Building a business from scratch with no money
I have been drawn to social media from the very beginning. I remember it started with AOL, Yahoo, and chat rooms. My best friend introduced me to that world.
Then I got on Black Planet, Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, and it blossomed from there.
It’s fun to connect with others through social networks. You can talk to people across the world, anytime, 24/7. Some of my first online friends included a guy who worked Wall Street in New York, a psychics major, and a bunch of other people.
So, you have social media for the social aspect of it all, connecting with people, making friends, dating, etc. Then, there’s the business side as well where you can network professionally, get leads, acquire clients, sell your products and services, sell yourself and your influence, and more.
I won’t bore you sharing how I used social media to grow my e-commerce sales to $30K per month or how I grew my IG account by nearly 25X in a year or my other stories. These were all in the past and I no longer run that store or that IG account, anyway but, if you’re curious about it, you can check out this story:
Instead, I’m going to share how I started a six-figure faceless social media account with no money.
Let’s go.
Starting a faceless business from scratch with no money
There aren’t many businesses you can start with no money out of pocket. But fortunately, a social media business is one of them.
What’s a social media business?
It depends.
Basically, you run your business on social media. It’s the bread and butter behind your company.
Here are the different ways I make money from my social media business:
- Social media management
- Lead generation
- Brand deals
- Selling products
While these are the core ways I drive money into my bank account from social media, there are other ways I get rewarded as a direct and indirect result of my online presence on social, too.
Here’s how it all started…
Discovering Tik Tok
I’ve been on social media for a while as you can see. I have always had a Facebook and Twitter account. I’ve had Instagram too, but rarely use it. Same with Snapchat and Linkedin.
In 2020 I started using Tik Tok and I became obsessed.
It was the only social media network that I truly loved being on. I could scroll the platform for hours and be totally content. I didn’t feel drained, I didn’t feel like I wasted my time, or unplug thinking negative thoughts, or self-conscious about myself. This was how other social networks made me feel sometimes but not with Tik Tok.
I was working on my Millennial Nextdoor brand and thought it would be fitting to create a Tik Tok account for it.
I did and it grew so fast!
In the first year or so I had nearly 100K followers.
I was using that Tik Tok account to make some money here and there but mainly I wanted to drive traffic to my blog. I was figuring things out for a while before my core monetization strategy revealed itself.
I took that monetization strategy to start a new Tik Tok account.
From the start, I knew what the purpose of that Tik Tok account was and what my goals were for it in the future.
It started last year and today I have 95K+ followers and I’ll make at least $100K from it this year.
This is one Tik Tok account.
Imagine if I had 5…
1 Tik Tok account at $100K/year or 5 Tik Tok accounts at $500K/year?
I’ve created a recipe for building, growing, and monetizing Tik Tok. The best part is that my business is completely faceless!
I’m an introvert and I like to be more behind-the-scenes. I make faceless videos that don’t require me to show my face and most of the time don’t need my voice either.
Thanks to that account and my other social media endeavors, it’s created a nice five-figure per month income stream (I made $11K last month) for myself.
How can you create a profitable faceless Tik Tok account?
There are three steps you take:
- Choose your monetization strategy
- Pick a niche
- Create content and grow your account
I have seen so many different Tik Tok accounts do very well on the platform like Miss.Excel who does MS Excel tutorials/hacks online or brialem who shines a light on her love of food and life, creating recipes and sharing her Trader Joe’s hauls.
There are so many paths you can take. You’d be surprised how people can take an interest in your daily life and the things you do which you might consider totally boring.
What happens from here
I will continue to use social media to fuel my business. But, I’m not just limited here. I will grow my email list, grow my blogs and network and continue to push the limits.
What do you think about social media businesses? Are they a fad or here to stay?
