Summary

The author has purchased a specialized grow bag containing sawdust colonized by mushroom mycelium for $30, with the intention of growing Lion's Mane mushrooms at home.

Abstract

The author recounts their enthusiasm for cultivating Lion's Mane mushrooms after a previous successful cooking experience. They have invested in a $30 grow bag filled with mycelium-colonized sawdust from a local business. The process involves making a slit in the bag, maintaining humidity through regular spritzing, and potentially constructing a Monotub Fruiting Chamber for increased humidity. The author anticipates mushroom growth within two weeks and views the endeavor as both a potential food source and an enjoyable experiment.

Opinions

I spent $30 on a bag of sawdust — but it’s not just any sawdust!

After my first experience cooking a Lion’s Mane mushroom, I was interested in learning more. I saw a Facebook post from a local business, saying they had “Grow Bags” for sale.

According to the description, “The sawdust has been colonized by mushroom mycelium.”

I cut a five-inch slit across the wide end of the bag, then spritzed it with water. I’ll have to add water a few times a day because these mushrooms like humid environments.

The kit included instructions for building a Monotub Fruiting Chamber if spritzing doesn’t work and it needs a more humid environment.

The mushrooms should start growing within two weeks. If I do it right, I’ll be able to harvest the mushrooms and eat them. If not, it’ll still be a fun experiment!
