I slept and dreamt
A poem
I slept and dreamt that I was winning I woke and saw my chances thinning I worked and went to put things right Until victory was once more in sight.
That night I slept and dreamt of ease But woke and did not what I please For pleasure lay in idle things And idle work no fortune brings.
Then I witnessed as I slumbered An endless troop of marching numbers And woke to realise I had seen Time advancing as we dream.
Again I toiled in the sun For every year the winter comes And whilst we have the soil and seeds To waste them shall bring toil indeed.
