I Sent an Email to My Former Boss

Will He Ever Respond?

Photo by Stephen Phillips - Hostreviews.co.uk on Unsplash

Hello fellow readers! If you have read some of my previous stories, you may know that I have been in a tireless job search for several months that has not been successful, but I don’t give up and I continue searching for alternatives! Some background information for you to understand the context:

  • In February 2023 I gave up my 9-year job, a job that I loved and made me happy but that in recent months had gotten out of control taking me to a critical level in my physical and mental health, and where, after talking about it with my boss without finding a solution, he told me that he was very sorry for the situation but that the best thing he could do for me was to “let me go.”
  • That year, I spent a few months recovering since unfortunately, the stress led me to develop Meniere’s disease, which is very debilitating when it is in its acute phase, basically, it does not let you live a life because the vertigo attacks don’t let your body move. (I have an article about it, you can find it at the end of this story!)
  • I always kept in touch with my former boss on WhatsApp for important dates since we had a good relationship and he was always very kind to me through his messages.
  • A year later, I am still unemployed. I have applied for countless jobs and had some interviews where the first impression seemed to be going well, but in the end, I was not selected because I am “overqualified” since the recruiters have a weird mindset:

“She has more than 10 years of experience, she will surely ask for a great salary, and when I clarify that my salary expectations are not high then they think that I am surely not so good because I do not value myself or that if they hire me it will only be a temporary job since I will resign as soon as I receive a better offer”….

I am tired of this situation, emotionally worn out while the accounts and debts continue to grow at home and my stress levels increase.

Whenever I meet someone from my previous job they ask me when I will return to work at the company, that they miss me, that even my former boss (the CEO) always talks wonders about my work and my contributions, and that if I talk to him he would have no problem hiring me again. That led me to decide to contact him and this is what happened.

My Application for an Open Position in the Company

Through LinkedIn, I found out about an open position suitable for my profile, at a level of much less experience, but I did not care, I applied on the company’s website and sent an email to the HR team (who I know well since they are also my friends) to let them know about my interest in returning to the company, clarifying that my expectation is not to obtain my previous position or salary, but that I can adapt to the salary tab they are managing for the position. They were happy to see my interest and said that they would move the pieces internally to make sure to include me in the recruitment process.

But I needed to do something else…

At the same time, I sent an email to who was my direct boss (the CEO) and with whom, as I mentioned before, I have a good relationship. It was very difficult for me to write that email and I opened my heart to very vulnerable issues about my current financial situation and the great need I have to get a job, no matter the title, no matter the salary, and clarified that I am willing to learn whatever he considers necessary for the role.

The answer: There was no answer…. no response at all.

The email was sent 10 days ago and there was no response so my mind began to go crazy...

Could it be that he didn’t read my email? Is it that as I sent it from my personal email, it was maybe considered spam and he didn’t even see it? Did he read it and decided to ignore me? Could it be that he is considering it and you don’t want to give me an answer too soon?

The truth is that I don’t know what to think since he always used to respond very quickly to any message or email from me, it’s not normal for him to take so long to respond, and it’s also true that he’s usually very straight, when he doesn’t feel like speaking he tells you directly, he doesn’t hide, he doesn’t go around the bush. But then, why hasn’t he responded yet?

I thought that maybe he didn’t see the email and maybe (just maybe) I should contact him on WhatsApp which is how I normally communicated with him before. But I don’t want to be a stalker and I don’t want to beg him to accept me back either, I think I deserve more than this, and already showed my most vulnerable side to him by sending that email last week, so should I do something else?

Maybe he’s not interested and he doesn’t appreciate me as much as he said and as everyone in the company constantly let me know.

What would you do? Am I overthinking this? It would help me a lot to read your opinion about it.

Thanks for reading! even if this application does not work, it has been very helpful to share my story here!

I leave a few stories here related to my experience with this process, feel free to read them too!
