Summary

The author describes overcoming a period of emotional heaviness and grief, symbolized by a drowning incident, through the cathartic act of singing.

Abstract

The text reflects on the author's journey through sorrow, comparing the emotional weight to the aftermath of a drowning. This heaviness is depicted as a persistent stream within, dampening the heart's attempts to express itself and heal from the loss. The heart, enveloped in grief, struggles to surface from the depths of mourning. However, the narrative takes a hopeful turn as the author recounts a moment when music breaks through the barriers of sorrow. The heart, once muted, finds its voice, and the act of singing becomes a liberating force, allowing the author to transcend the grief and sing with uninhibited joy and release.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that emotional pain can be as overwhelming as a physical drowning, indicating a profound impact on their well-being.
  • There is a sense of entrapment and suppression of feelings, as the heart's attempts to 'vent' are muffled by the surrounding grief.
  • The transformation from silence to song symbolizes a powerful personal break

I sang!

Since the drowning a while back

There was a heaviness that sat

As if a stream was still gushing in the insides

Of the cavity where my heart hides

And it muffled every attempt

Of my heart to vent

And pull itself from submerging in the mourning

Of the ill-fated drowning.

But today as a melody made its way

The walls of cavity finally gave way

And my heart cheered and it sang

Oh, I sang.

Unencumbered by the worry of a flittering stray/stay

I sang, sang away!
