I refuse to work

A poem

I refuse to work. I’m sorry, but I won’t. I won’t get up and get dressed, I won’t get in a car to drive Or a train to ride. I will not be so stressed! I might walk though. And actually, I might arrive

At my desk. Laptop on. In the kitchen, kettle on. In her bedroom, shouting even. Yes, of course I’ll do what’s needed Relax. My responsibilities won’t be shirked. Before you check, I’ll have succeeed But damned if you think it’s because I worked.

I insist I’ll say Fun was had today. When we go to sleep I’ll be happy I’ll insist I avoided the rat-trappy Reality you sell, But not so well That I, for one Forgo my sun To bend my head for duty That call’s not to me.

Not in the slightest. I will not work Each day I’ll search and find What fun I can dredge, From the keyboard or shouting, I’ll go to the very edge of Reason if I must, without doubting That I do not work. Why?

Because I’m lazy, I hate effort I hate struggle, I hate the meaningless comfort That comes from just carrying on. I want delight. I’m greedy, I guess For moments daily to dwell upon In other moments — I must confess, I’m a hoarder of moments.

A collector of gems Of lifelong friends, Memories and keepsakes Everything that makes A day into a life.
