I Rediscovered My Creative Side At a Chance Pottery Class At the Age Of Thirty

Writing Prompt Response for A Taste For Life — Prompt 9: Video Prompt

Pottery (2007) and image by Author

As a kid, I somehow became interested in working with clay. I’m not even sure how it happened, but I remember clearly asking my mom if I could do a pottery class in our small town in Canada.

Maybe it was the short section that we did on clay in my grade 7 art class that got me interested. In it, I made the below items that I photographed before getting rid of all of my possessions back in 2017.

These items might have made it into my one tote of possessions that is stored at my parents house now, I honestly can’t remember.

What is up with the pancakes?

She told me that there were no pottery classes for kids, only adults, so I guess I must have stopped asking her at some point. I forgot all about my want to do this until I saw a sign at the recreation center in a town that I had just moved to in 2006, at the age of 30.

Adult Pottery Classes!

‘Hey, I’m an adult now! I can do a pottery class.’ I realized.

I immediately called the number and basically begged the instructor to let me into the already full class.

As I sat with the clay in my hands in that fateful first class, the creative side of my brain erupted out the side of my head with reckless abandon.

My life flashed before my eyes, and it has never been the same since.

At that point, I hadn’t done any sort of creative work since I was a child, but I immediately found my artistic voice, and have been cultivating it ever since.

One thing that I have realized in the process of rediscovering my creativity, is that we are all creative. We all have the ability to do art and make things, it is just something that we have lost along the way.

Someway, somehow, society has made us forget our innate creative abilities.

When I saw Jason Edmunds's weekend prompt in his publication A Taste For Life, I couldn’t help but share my life-changing experience. Below is the video prompt.

If you are wondering where your creative voice went, I highly recommend getting involved in some sort of class. Take a drawing class, do a wine and paint night, or try your hand at some pottery.

I can guarantee you that you will likely surprise yourself with what you create:)

I started a publication called Share Your Creativity earlier this year. My aim is to unlock others’ creative potential. Maybe you would like to join us?

I do believe that we are all creative and that we all have the ability to make art.

Sometimes we just need a push in the right direction to get there.

Thanks, Jason for another inspiring prompt!

Happy Creating!
