I Read Reese Witherspoon’s Favorite Books (And They’re Unforgettable)

Addictive books you need to read as soon as possible

Award-winning Legally Blonde actress Reese Witherspoon reads a lot of books. Reese’s book club has been recommending her favorite books every month since 2017. She chooses books “with a woman at the center of the story” in a variety of genres, from thrillers to historical fiction to romance.

In this article, I will review three books Reese Witherspoon recommends and tell you whether or not they are worth your time.

Let’s dive right in!

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

In March 2019, Reese Witherspoon chose Daisy Jones and the Six as her book club pick. She said, “My March pick for Reese’s Book Club is ‘Daisy Jones and The Six’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid and it ROCKS. Literally. The book centers on the meteoric rise of a rock band in the ’70s and its lead singers, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, whose connection is as electric as the music they make together. It’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, people!”

Reese couldn’t put the book down. She said, “I devoured this in a day.” Reese believed in the story so much she decided to adapt it. The recent Amazon Prime TV series adaptation of Daisy Jones is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine.

I completely agree with Reese Witherspoon’s enthusiasm for this story. I love Daisy Jones and I think it is a great pick for a book club discussion.

The characters are flawed but likable. The format is unique; it’s told in interview transcripts. I ended up listening to the audiobook, and I highly recommend that option. It’s full cast and made the story come to life.

If you haven’t read Daisy Jones and the Six yet, you should. It’s definitely worth the read!

Goodreads

“I used to think soul mates were two of the same. I used to think I was supposed to look for somebody that was like me. I don’t believe in soul mates anymore and I’m not looking for anything. But if I did believe in them, I’d believe your soul mate was somebody who had all the things you didn’t, that needed all the things you had. Not somebody who’s suffering from the same stuff you are.” ― Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daisy Jones & The Six

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Reese Witherspoon’s book club pick for March 2023 was The Nightingale. She said, “This important story illuminates a part of history that’s often overlooked: the women’s war. It’s a harrowing tale of two sisters, survival, love, and female resilience throughout Nazi-occupied France.”

She also stated the novel is “arguably one of the most powerful, most captivating novels about [World War II] in recent years.” It centers on “female resilience” and is “so heart-wrenching.”

The Nightingale is one of my favorite historical fiction books. Even though it is several hundred pages, I finished it in a few days. I couldn’t wait to get to the end. Reading about the sisters’ relationship and their efforts during the war was so moving. I felt like I stepped back in time. The writing style is vivd and I got chills reading certain parts of the book.

If you like historical fiction and strong female heroines, I highly recommend The Nightingale!

Goodreads

“For us it was a shadow war. There were no parades for us when it was over, no medals or mentions in history books. We did what we had to during the war, and when it was over, we picked up the pieces and started our lives over.” ― Kristin Hannah, The Nightingale

You Have a Match by Emma Lord

You Have a Match is about a girl who discovers she has a secret sister when she takes a DNA test. It was Reese’s young adult book club pick for winter 2021. She wrote, “Talk about a meet-cute! This story is about sisterhood, friendship and a very unique family dynamic that starts with unforeseen test results from a DNA service. If you have a younger sister in your life… this one’s for her!”

I enjoyed this cute story about two sisters coming together. The book’s plot feels similar to the movie The Parent Trap. The wholesome and sweet ending made me smile. The book could sometimes be a bit predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

I would recommend You Have a Match for teens and younger readers because of the writing style and the age of the main characters. So, if you have kids, this could be a great summer read!

Goodreads

“If you learn to capture a feeling, it’ll always be louder than words.” ― Emma Lord, You Have a Match

Closing Thoughts

All three of Reese Witherspoon’s picks have a focus on strong female protagonists. The books are about coming together and making history. I also love the female friendships and sisterhood themes in all the books.

I enjoyed all three of Reese Witherspoon’s favorite books and highly recommend Daisy Jones and the Six, The Nightingale, and You Have a Match.
