There’s a very simple reason for this. It’s my fault. I’m a freak about organizing sometimes, and this entire post contains links that are similar in their layout. So it would look weirdly as if I was suggesting John’s videos are the highlight of my life. I Quit Watching TV back in 2013: This is What I Have Been Watching Instead

My bizarre, curated list of random YouTube channels — hidden gems, great wisdom, creative inspiration, and some strange stuff you’ll have to see to believe — that’ll get you hooked too!

I spent the pandemic lockdown doing mostly two things; watching YouTube videos and building a camper van out of a cargo van.

But that’s another story…

A friend of mine in Hawai’i asked me to share some of my favorite YouTube channels. She’s like me and finds “regular cable programming” to be nothing short of stupidification of the masses.

So I quickly looked at my most recent viewing and was amazed at how many channels I have been watching for years.

I quickly posted links to a few on the Facebook post where she asked for my favorite YouTube channels. But Facebook isn’t the place for comprehensive content. It’s great for a quick meme, or to quickly shut down a deplorable who’s spreading lies about drinking chemicals to save themselves from the deep left state.

So I created this list of my regular viewing.

Delving into the data I discovered that I have 1,036 subscriptions. That number really hit me. I have no idea how that happened since I apparently wasn't paying attention the whole time.

Then I looked at my “Time Watched” to get an idea of how much time I spend on YouTube. It said that I spent about 12 hours over the last 7 days watching videos. If I am doing the math correctly, that means I spend on average 1 hour and 42 minutes per day watching YouTube.

When I figured that out I didn’t feel so bad. But on that same page it said my viewing was down 30% from last week.

Ugh!

By my guestimate that means I watch a little more than 2 hours of YouTube per day, or approximately 730 hours every year.

That doesn’t make me an expert, but it does mean I have a lot of experience watching video content from creators on YouTube.

The following is my personal cherry-picked and carefully curated list of YouTube channels I like. It is by no means exhaustive, and I have may missed a few, but overall, this is a pretty damn extensive list.

These channels are mostly great storytellers. The main topics are Travel, Vanlife, Current Events and Politics, Philosophy, Creativity, Art, Making Things, Building Stuff, Creative Thinking, Videography, Photography, Film, humor, Alternative Living, Future Think, Fun, Food, Drink, Freedom of the Press, Free Speech, Real Estate Dreaming, gadgets, gear and more (but mostly travel related).

For most of these channels I have watched nearly all the content they have made from before 2019 up to now. That’s a lot of videos and time.

I recommend you start by looking back at their early content and watching chronologically from there. Often they have set up playlists for you to watch certain series of content you might be interested in.

Travel & Adventure

This is my favorite topic on YouTube. Many of these storytelling YouTubers I have watched for years. I have reached out to some of them, helped support their channels financially when I could, and shared their content with others.

They’re all different and unique. They are also not listed in any order.

Real News, but Told by Real People, and sometimes Comedians (who tell the truth better). You could call this politics, but that would be oversimplifying.

The first thing many may notice is the absence of John Oliver. There’s a very simple reason for this. It’s my fault. I’m a freak about organizing sometimes, and this entire post contains links that are similar in their layout. But when I tried to add John Oliver’s YouTube link, it would not allow the same style of link as the rest of the links in this article. So it would look weirdly as if I was suggesting John’s videos are the highlight of my life. But hey, I really like John Oliver, but I didn’t want anyone to get any ideas that I worship him as an information God or something like that.

Kidding aside, I wrote the above paragraph in John’s voice. You should read it that way.

Below are my most watched information-based, perspectives in current events, and political discord YouTube Channels:

Creative, Quirky, Cutting Edge, Constructive, Funny & Unique

This is a catch-all topic area of sorts. Otherwise you’d be inundated with topic titles. Here are some of the most interesting creative people who have their own style and sometimes quirkiness that has found it’s way into my heart. Some of them are just unique and highly informative on a wide range of subjects. Others are the voice of a niche group that I’m interested in. They are builders, organizers, doers, goers, makers, and above all, storytellers.

A couple of them I put here because they didn’t fit elsewhere, but because they’re highly engaging, interesting, or very informative, they made this article.

Wisdom, Politics, Thought Leaders & Thinkers

Deep thoughts ahead! This is where I have spent many hours in deep contemplation. Some of their content I have shared more often then most of the other categories.

These are storytellers that are talking about life and the human condition. They will make you think and perhaps question a lot of what you thought was true.

Free Speech and Freedom of the Press
