I Procrastinate!
And I Do It So Well

You might be asking: why is there a baseball graphic at the top of an article about procrastination? [I’ll get to that.]
In my head, when I start any project, I think about its future — i.e. publishing and marketing that project/product — because that’s necessary to get it “out there” to get sales — or reads.
My head goes:
maybe it’s not good enough to put out there yet
maybe people won’t like it
maybe it needs to be worked on a bit more
maybe it needs……..
And so back to baseball
I am a lifelong baseball fan — a used-to-be Yankee fan — who grew up with a diehard Bronx Yankee fan father. [I also love other sports — admittedly though, years in Boston turned me into a Red Sox fan.]
Good hitters in baseball have batting averages of about 300 — give or take. The last player to have a 400 average was Ted Williams — and that was in 1941!! Before 1941, there were more high averages, but 79 years is a long stretch without anyone doing it again!
Think about this: a player with a 300 batting average only gets a hit 3 out of 10 times at bat — or looking at it the other way:
they miss getting a hit 7 out of 10 times!

Batting perfection does not exist in baseball. No one bats 1000, and I remind myself of that frequently. If the best-paid players are not batting 1000, or even 400, why on earth should I expect myself to bat 1000 before I go ahead and finish my thing? [But I do expect that.]
Because of my training [Ph.D. in Psychology], I know that the best way to beat procrastination is to just do or start something and take it one step at a time. It’s the same way we can relieve stress — just do something. But because of that same training, I am also aware that it is very difficult for people to just “do the doing.”
I am better at helping others “do the doing” than I am at “doing my own doing.”
I am sitting here laughing as I write that — but for me, it’s serious as well as funny. I have to learn how to do my own doing and get out of my own way.
And to just finish what I start!
After all, I am one who often says: that’s why God invented editing and 2nd editions.

I've had a lot of practice at procrastinating — but even I can change — we all can.
For the rest of the year, I am going to FINISH AND PUBLISH more articles for Medium and my blogs — and FINISH, RECORD, AND PUBLISH those half done courses that sit on my computer!
I will stop thinking about batting 1000 and get them done!
My goal for this “season” is to have a batting average of at least 350!
And next year, I’d like to write an article called:
I used to be a procrastinator — until I accepted blemishes — and learned to do the doing!!
