I Paid Lensa to Generate 200 ‘Unique’ Avatars of Me - They Are Rather Unique Indeed

Premium pricing, inconsistent quality — Is the AI Magic Avatar feature worth it?

What is Lensa?

Lensa is an all-in-one image subscription based editing app that takes your photos and selfies to the next level. Besides functioning as an video, photo editor, Lensa has an additional paid feature called ‘Magic Avatar’ that allows you to upload up to 20 selfies for AI to create stunning and vibrant avatar from 22 styles (e.g sci-fi, superhero, anime, pop art, impression, statue) You can find more information about Lensa here.

Magic Avatar

Intrigued by the magic avatar ads that have been going around, I paid for a bundle of 200 avatar. Below are some of the results:

Lensa AI Avatar of me #1
Lensa AI Avatar of me #2
Lensa AI Avatar of me #3
Lensa AI avatar of me #4
Lensa AI Avatar of me #5

Verdict

Besides finding the experience of a computer generated digital art of myself rather cool, I walked away from the results feeling a little underwhelmed. I find myself asking: who are these people?

  • Deformed, inaccurate avatars — The above avatars are just ones that I particularly find to be more on the accurate scale. Not only were some generated avatar deformed or abstract, facial features were sometimes inaccurate. I’ve included some examples of failed avatars below.

Reviews and developer responses

On doing a bit of research, it appears that I’m not the only one who has similar experiences.

Between the AI process not being able to correct and interpret data provided (20 Photos), the additional sum of payment for avatar creation on top of the subscription fees, I could easily understand and empathise with their frustration. Some users even have issues accessing the packs that they purchased, refunds doesn’t seem to be an easy option as well as payments are processed through apple store and takes time to verify.

Some recommendations that Lensa developers mentioned that would provide better results are as follows:

  • Don’t use a strong retouch and bright makeup
  • Face in provided photo should be clearly seen from various angles and you’re making different facial expressions
  • Photos are from several locations or against different background.

Conclusion

While AI generated content seems to be on the uprising and gaining popularity (or dissent), it brings with it certain issues and problems (at the moment). While it is still considered a novelty and new feature, we can expect pricing to remain premium and quality to be a hit and miss.
