I Once Made a Dog Cafe for my School Project

Oh to dream of drinking coffee while hanging out with multiple dogs!

The name and logo for my project

As some of you may know, I am an Interior Design graduate. Multiple projects in the program consist of being given a building location and creating a space out of it based on the project’s goal. More than 2 years ago, my studio class’ project was on 111 Gerard Street East Toronto; The goal is to make a space with Ryerson students as its target audience.

Precedents

111 Gerard Street East in Toronto Ontario is located close to the Ryerson Student campus. Students from the campus are often stressed and once in while should have a break in order to perform better. Studies show that animals have so many advantages not only to the mental well being, but to physical well being as well. My concept is a play place for both dogs and students alike. To take a break from the stress of school work, students are encouraged to bring their dogs to play with, to let their dogs play with other dogs, and to even interact with other dog owners.

The study of these precedents are crucial in attempting to exhibit playfulness in the whole space.
The study of this precedent is crucial in studying how a space with food, dogs and humans work. It basically displays an open space for the dogs to roam and play around on in contrast to the seats and tables on the sides for the humans to watch from and relax on.
The study of this precedent is crucial in applying an openness in an enclosed building to prevent stuffiness.
The study of these precedents is crucial in making a space that combines and promotes both active activities and relaxing activities. It all incorporates natural features, which greatly contributes to a space’s positive energy, freshness, and openness.

Research on Dogs and Mental Well Being

  • Interacting with pets lowers our stress hormones
  • Our pets make us feel needed
  • Pets increase our sense of self-esteem and well-being
  • Cats and dogs are great examples of being in the moment
  • Pets support recovery from mental illness
  • Pets help us build healthy habits
  • Pets support social connection
  • Pets give us unconditional love

Basic Idea

Rough section

One of the main objectives for the House of Paws is to input as much openness as possible. The first floor will basically have an open space for dogs to play on, while the mezzanine above enables both humans and dogs to see and watch the space below.

Basic construction of the building
Preliminary sketches

The indoor dog park would have seats that lets the owners to watch and socialize; The relaxing area above would also have seats more for lounging and little beds for dogs to nap on.

Concept Rendering

Final Project

The final project ends up being only 2 floors that show playfulness (the theme of the ground floor) and relaxation (the theme of the second floor).
Ground Floor Plan
This render shows the playing area plus the feature stairs. The wallpaper throughout the building feature minimal portraits of different breeds of dogs.
This render display the eating area that has furniture that is both human and dog friendly. The glass in between the eating area and the playing area lets users on both sides see the state of opposing sides. The color palette of the whole building promotes relaxation and freshness in everyone’s eyes.
Second Floor Plan
This shows how the bigger lounging area in the second floor is used.
This render shows how the sloped windows above would look from the playing area below.
This elevation exhibits one big window (shaped like the entry way of a dog house) that lets vast amounts of light in, which contributes to the main theme of openness.
This section shows how the two floors connect together as one big interactive space for both human and dogs.

I know I have made more progress with my rendering skills since then, and I aim to re-do this project from more than 2 years ago. Stay tuned for the re-rendering!
