I often argued with my mom about being too nice.

And she would laugh, saying no kindness goes to waste.

Case in point:

During summer, there were ants in our kitchen. To keep them away from the food, we placed food containers in large trays filled with water.

One day, we stacked the containers, as usual, unaware that they touched the tray’s edge, forming a convenient bridge to the food.

Two hours later, imagine our shock at seeing a steady row of ants feasting on the food! I was about to disrupt them when my Mom grabbed my hand, saying, “No — don’t do that. They’ve worked so hard. Let them party!” I still laugh when I think of this.
