Summary

The author has evolved from focusing on the number of followers and monetary gain to prioritizing the intrinsic value of writing and personal growth on Medium.

Abstract

The author began blogging on Medium a year ago, initially driven by the platform's vast audience and the joy of writing. After a six-month hiatus, they returned with the goal of monetizing their content by joining the Medium Partner Program, which required 100 followers. The author's journey is divided into two phases: the first, where they aimed to quickly accumulate followers and earn money, and the second, where they shifted focus to improving writing quality and finding joy in the process. Despite initial motivation being tied to follower count and earnings, the author now values creating meaningful content and personal development over financial incentives.

Opinions

  • The author initially viewed Medium as a free platform to share blogs and later discovered its potential for earning money.
  • The first phase of blogging was marked by a daily posting challenge to rapidly increase followers and earnings, which the author abandoned after 10 days due to lack of expected results.
  • In the second phase, the author adopted a more sustainable approach to blogging, posting twice a week and practicing writing daily on Quora, leading to a love for the writing process itself.
  • The author's mindset shifted from reaching follower milestones to enhancing writing quality and personal improvement, with less emphasis on the number of followers.
  • The author now prioritizes creating value through their writing and considers this their current purpose, with money no longer being the primary motivation.

I No More Care About The Number of Followers — Here is Why?

At the time of publishing, I have 97 followers.

It is almost a year I have first posted a blog on Medium. Back then(2020) as I was not consistent, I only posted 7 blogs. The reason I started then was that — it is free to publish a blog and Medium also has a huge user base. Although when I started posting, I was not concerned that Medium actually pay money to post blogs on their site. So I was uploading just for fun and to look at my writing skill.

After quitting Medium with just 7 blogs, almost 6 months later while looking for ways to earn money online; I came across Medium again. This time it was clear to me that Medium pays real money. So I checked all the criteria to monetize my posts and saw I need 100 followers to apply for Medium Partner Program. So from there, my first phase on Medium started.

Phase #1

Phase 1 of my blogging journey on Medium has started in September of 2021. All my target at that time was to hit the sweet 100 followers mark as soon as possible and start earning money. So I gave myself the challenge to upload blogs every day as I saw many writes here getting fantastic views uploading daily.

But I only continued for 10 days and stopped. Money was all my motivation then and that is why I stopped at that time I guess. Nothing happened according to my plan — I didn’t get expected views, followers. For that, I quit.

Phase #2

If you read my blog on hitting 1000 subscribers on YouTube, you know I started YouTube 2nd time with a proper plan. Here in the case of Medium, I did that again. I thought instead of following what others do I will go according to my capability. I will post twice a week and practice writing on Quora(I am pretty active there, so you can follow me) daily. My motivation was,

Small step, long vision.

Although motivation again was hitting 100 followers and money, but after practicing writing daily I somewhat fell in love with the process.

So my mindset changed from reaching a milestone to how to improve my writing quality and be better at this. The close I come towards 100 followers the less excitement get to hit the follower mark.

I can proudly say now, money is no more my motivation. Creating value is the present purpose.

So this is all for the blog.
