I Never Thought I Would Be Writing About Bean Sprouts Yet Here I Am…

My mouth is watering right now. Yours will too, in a few minutes.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what most of this was. There wasn’t much I could order on the menu because most of it was spicy! I think I only had some chicken and rice here. (photo provided by Linda Ng)

Have you been missing my Malaysian and food stories? Well, BAM. Here you go! I am writing about BEAN SPROUTS FROM IPOH today!

Never would I have thought I’d be writing about bean sprouts. Of all the types of food I could feature, bean sprouts seems so ordinary and boring! I mean bean sprouts are ok in general. HOLD YOUR HORSES. 🐴 When you see them in Ipoh, you will suddenly realize what you’ve been missing your whole life.

Here is a photo of bean sprouts from my local supermarket. I risked looking ridiculous to take these pictures. It was something I had to do because this was the only way you would be able to see the difference.

At the grocery store, bean sprouts are usually sold in a tub like this. You grab a produce bag and fill it up. (photo provided by Linda Ng)
Here’s a closer shot of the bean sprouts. Check out the size. (photo provided by Linda Ng)

Why Are Bean Sprouts So Special in Ipoh?

If you are planning a trip to Ipoh and do your research, you’ll definitely come across bean sprouts as a highly recommended food.

Bean sprouts (芽菜 — Cantonese, Taugeh — Malay) are one of the most famous dishes you can order in Ipoh. It is commonly served with chicken, but you can also order just a plate of bean sprouts of you like. It’s so delicious, I have done that and didn’t have a single regret.

As you can see from the photos above, the bean sprouts are thin and long.

Now hang on to something…..

Let me show you a photo of bean sprouts from Ipoh.

YES!!!!!!! SO GOOD!!!! (photo provided by Linda Ng)

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

That’s right! The bean sprouts are short and fat! Not only that, they are also VERY crunchy and juicy. Combine that with a sprinkle of white pepper, sweet soy sauce, and green onions…aaaaaand you have yourself the PERFECT DISH! My mouth is drooling. 🤤

Why are the bean sprouts like this in Ipoh? Well, Ipoh is a mountainous city. The water used to grow the bean sprouts is from the limestone hills. That is the secret ingredient for the bean sprouts! I have never seen them like this anywhere else.

Because I’m evil, let me share some more photos with you….

Here’s a meal with the chicken. I could sniff this in two seconds. (photo provided by Linda Ng)

And just in case your stomach isn’t rumbling or your mouth isn’t watering yet…here you go..

I can’t get over how short and fat they are! (photos provided by Linda Ng)

Are you asking how much a plate of bean sprouts cost? It’s 3 Ringgits. In Canadian Dollars, that’s just under $1. I’M NOT LYING, I SWEAR.

Go crazy, order 10 plates!

See the proof here! It’s the last item on the receipt! By the way, that whole chicken meal up there? It’s like $12 Canadian.

You can’t imagine how happy I was!

It’s real. It’s less then $1. (photo provided by Linda Ng)

Now that you’re done cursing at me because I’m showing you these scrumptious dishes, are you thinking about visiting Ipoh now?
