I Love Sushi

Japanese food is my comfort food

There was a time when I did not eat Asian food. I wouldn’t say I was a picky eater, but as a kid, I drew the line at things that looked strange and I could barely pronounce. Every Monday, my parents had to go to their favorite Chinese restaurant. They went so often that they became friends with the owner. Unfortunately, they dragged me along, too. On the plus side, the restaurant had grilled cheese on the kid’s menu, and that’s what I got for the longest time.

Eventually, I graduated to shrimp fried rice. I liked shrimp and I liked eggs, so I figured it couldn’t be all bad. That was my go-to for years, and then I tried sweet and sour chicken. That was the extent of my trying Chinese food or any other Asian food until I was an adult. I don’t go deep with the cuisine, but I’ve since discovered I love mushroom chicken with fried rice.

When a local Japanese restaurant — Love Sushi — opened, my husband and I had to check it out.

Their miso soup is delicious. I’ve made it at home with packets I’ve found at the grocery store, but nothing beats the saltiness, pieces of tofu, and green onions that Love Sushi serves. The store-bought miso has seaweed instead of green onion, which I don’t mind, but I prefer Love Sushi’s.

My favorite rolls will always be California and Philadelphia, but I’m on a mission to try their entire menu of rolls. Anything with crab meat, shrimp, cream cheese, and/or avocado and I’m all in. My youngest son’s favorite at the same restaurant is the gyoza, deep-fried pork dumplings. These are delicious, but give me all the rolls.

They used to give complimentary banana tempura topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce for dessert when they first opened. I wish they still served these.

It’s funny the things we gravitate towards, whether it be food or something else. I’ve never been a fan of plain white rice but sushi (especially tuna) and these rolls are my comfort food. My husband always says he could eat Mexican food every day, and we do eat our share of Mexican food. If I had to pick a food I could eat every day, it’d definitely be miso soup and these rolls.

Thank you to OCTAVIA EVER AFTER for this fun, food-filled challenge.

Akemi Sagawa has inspired me to try to make my own miso.
