I Lost Interest in Writing as Soon as I Started Writing About Writing

I started my Medium journey writing pieces that I found entertaining to write. I just wanted to put pen to paper (finger to keyboard) about topics that I found either amusing or interesting. And I really enjoyed the experience, initially.

But then something happened.

I lost my way and found it more difficult to sit down and write. Desire had gone and it was turning into more of a job than a passion project. On reflection, it is clear to see why.

I had fallen into the trap of writing things I thought would lead to views. Like this piece. Just being honest, writing about earning money does well. Just look at how many pieces in your feed are talking about their earnings through Medium/Freelancing/Youtube. 5 new articles a day?

I think many writers fall into this and it inevitably ends up killing their desire to write. And as a result, the quality of their work suffers.

Let’s be honest, what articles discussing earnings online are masterpieces that will stand the test of time? None. They are copycat themes and pretty much all of the same as the next one. This is coming from someone who has written them. And shamefully still reads them. Damn you with your clickbaity title!

This is not a subtle (or not so subtle) dig at anyone. It is just something that I have found in my own writing journey. I have realized if I am going to ignite that fire to write or even succeed in writing something substantial or worthwhile, I need to focus on pieces that are not so generic and easy. The days of the copout quick win have passed me by.

Original posts may not get as many views and earn as much initially. But they are more likely to keep me writing regularly and give me more of a chance of reaching my goal of writing for a living.

I am on a mission to reclaim the initial excitement I had to write. The feeling lost on the voyage for a few extra dollars.

Oh yeah, as promised, I made this much. See the article below.
