I Like the Stories That I Write in 30 Minutes Better

Someone else here?

I have a secret for you. And it’s about my writing… Feel free to read and/or replicate…

I take a look at my stories’ feed. How long do you think my favorite stories took to write? Well, you saw the title, so no surprises here.

What comes as a surprise, at least to me, is that the stories that most resonate with people, my best-performing stories, were also those that I wrote in 30 minutes – or even less!

NOTE: Post editing not included. I mean the raw writing

How? What? Why?

Let’s begin by saying that I’m not sure. So I may update this in the future. But I can take some (un)educated guesses.

People like being treated like… well, like people. People like feeling like a human is waving at them behind the screen: Hello hello! It’s me! Enjoying this?!

They like imagining the author behind a story directly telling them what happened. How they felt.

The more you show your quirks, your real persona; and the less you edit and edit again, and try to make every sentence perfect; the more human and relatable you look.

Sometimes I like doing research for my stories, adding links and footnotes, and so forth. After all, I’m a former academic and university professor. I did that for a living. It’s ingrained in me.

But that can feel detached, right?

What if, instead, I just sit down and start writing whatever I have been ruminating in my head? Without censoring my thoughts?

Just like I’m doing right now. Can you sense me? Can you feel how I am typing this just as I am thinking about it? Can you sense how I am typing as if I was speaking to my friend on the phone?

I hope you can, because that’s what I am doing right now.

Do I always do it like this?

Of course not. Not all stories can be told this way. Remember my love for research above?

Want to try it out? Here it is…

  1. Think about something you are itching to tell the word.
  2. Open a New Story tab.
  3. Start writing whatever pops up in your brain. Uncensored. Anything. Do not worry. You, and only you, will get to see this version. Done?
  4. Great, now step up from your desk, go to the bathroom, kiss your spouse, play with the kids, or eat some dark chocolate (I suggest the latter, but it’s up to you).
  5. Great, now come back. Re-read what you wrote. Edit as you go, but not too much. Just fix whatever doesn’t make sense. Done?
  6. Great. Now add some figures directly from Unsplash. Something relevant to each section. Give your reader some breaks.
  7. Wait a few hours and do another final read, but don’t overdo it.
  8. Hit submit. WHAAAAAAT? Yes, hit submit.
  9. Now step up and go about your day as if nothing happened. Repeat for 63 days and tell me what happened.
  10. I feel like I should add a #10, it feels odd otherwise.

For real, give it a go. It took me 15 minutes to throw the first version of this out. I’ll do the edits now. But first, I need to go grab some dark chocolate and kiss Hubs.

For real, try it!

What’s the worst that can happen?

Hey there! I hope you enjoyed my story. If you did, why not give me a follow and subscribe to my publications? That way, you won’t miss any of my quirks in the future. Thanks for reading!
