MEDIUM

I Know Why You’re Not Making Money With Medium Referrals

I am getting way more Medium membership referrals than I had expected and this is why

Photo by Siora Photography on Unsplash

Medium referrals are simple. Someone reads your work, who isn’t already a paying subscriber of Medium. They use your link to purchase a membership. You receive a portion of their fee every month.

Getting referrals is less simple

The only way to obtain these referrals is by promoting your referral link. The easiest way to do this is by advertising it within or at the end of your Medium articles. Then hopefully someone will have enjoyed your work enough to want to join Medium.

When I first became aware of the referral program, I was super skeptical. I just didn’t see how I was going to generate any subscriptions. Most of the people who read my work are already members and thought it unlikely that I would make any sales from such a small amount of non-member readers.

I used the referral link anyway

My attitude was simple, I have nothing to lose; it takes 2 minutes to add the link to a story, so why not just use it? So I used it and the unexpected happened.

Now every month (as long as no one cancels!) I will receive $8.82 before I write a single word. That’s passive money. I know to many, it might not seem like much, but I think it’s an amazing thing, which could provide writers with a little financial stability.

I think I know why I have been successful with the scheme

I write here on Medium, but I read a heck of a lot too. Every time I say I am going to write something for Medium, I open the home page and end up reading ten stories before I write a single word. I love so much of the content I read here, but when it comes to people advertising the referral program, I have noticed a problem.

Why do people not use the embedded link?

It really bugs me, because of the difference between this,

And this,

Join Medium with my referral link — Delilah Brass

Or this,

Join here

It's HUGE!

I obviously use the first option from the list above. Why? Because it looks 100% more legit and appealing. People have a reasonable sense of caution when clicking on a hyperlinked text on the internet. The top option looks safe. It also looks professional and more aesthetically pleasing. I know it makes me want to click more. So I know it will make other people feel similar.

I think this is an easy and effective tool that anyone can implement and start earning.

If you’re struggling to get any Medium referrals and are not using the embedded link, why don’t you try using it and see what happens? You might be surprised.
