I Just Reached One Thousand Followers!

A big thank you to all my readers!

Much gratitude to everyone for all the reading, following, clapping and responding that you’ve given my work over the time that I’ve been publishing here.

I joined Medium in July 2021 and my intention was to hit the ground running. I faced a steep learning curve, but it’s been a lot of fun.

In the seven months since I joined, I’ve written goodness knows how many thousands of words, published 86 articles, and now gained over 1K of followers.

As well as the writing, I enjoy the social aspect of the platform. I’ve met a lot of new and interesting people and read some truly inspiring comments and stories by others.

Subject Matter

Fifty percent of my articles concern quitting alcohol. There are two reasons for this:

  1. I realized early on that many people had a particular interest in reading about this element of my life. I’ve never pretended to be a medical or addiction expert, but I do think that there’s a value in just writing an honest account of my experiences and what I have learned about alcohol over the past five years.
  2. I‘ve received a lot of positive feedback from people who’ve found my accounts helpful. This has encouraged me to explore the topic more.

While I do enjoy writing for its own sake, it’s rewarding to feel that I’m doing something useful and potentially sparking positive change in the lives of others.

However, I don’t write solely about stopping drinking. There’s more going on in my mind and life and my rejection of alcohol is just one aspect.

The Future?

2021 was a big year for me. Previously, I was working a part-time job a few days a week to support my writing income. However, the job was physically strenuous and that was becoming too much for me at my age, fifty-six years old, so I handed in my notice.

This put my finances in a more perilous position and it’s been a struggle since then trying to survive on my writing income. I could always get another part-time job, of course, and maybe that will have to happen, but for now, I’m doing my best to make this work.

I write at other places, but my current aim at Medium is to continue to publish one or two articles each week. Half of them will be likely on quitting alcohol and the others will be concerned with topics such as aging, music, philosophy, current events, and other matters.

I hope that my followers will be with me on that journey.
