I Have Never Been An Artist

Why Not Try?

Photo by Anna Kolosyuk on Unsplash

I could never draw beyond some two-dimensional-looking shapes, and painting was not a talent of mine. I couldn’t sculpt.

You get the picture. No pun intended.

One day, I decided to paint for fun. I had a few photos I had taken during my travels in Namibia, and I wanted to recreate them. I found painting to be soothing, and I enjoyed focusing on the process.

I was pleasantly surprised at the result.

The same was true for drawing.

I began by trying to draw parts of a face, and then I drew my son. I could not believe how I was able to create a portrait that was actually recognizable.

Now, I am not saying that I am a top-notch artist.

What I am getting at is I never knew what I was capable of because I had convinced myself somewhere along the way that I couldn't do it.

What Have You Always Wanted To Try?

Think back for yourself to things you’ve always wanted to try. I have a few other things on my list.

Baking, sewing, knitting…

Now that you have made your list. Think back to what happened to those interests. What made you stop?

Was it because the first attempt was a failure? My cupcakes aren’t cute, but they are tasty!

Was it the criticism of others? My mother, a former seamstress, winces at how I sew a button.

Was it comparing your first draft to someone else’s masterpiece and assuming you would come up short? I don’t even know how to hold the knitting needles.

Yet…

This is a growth mindset in action, people!

Uncover Your Talents and Try Something New

What talents are you hiding from the world? How many are you hiding from yourself?

Studies show there are a lot of benefits to incorporating enjoyable activities as we age. Yes, you may have responsibilities crowding your day, but self-development is important when leading a fulfilling life.

You have to create the time to enrich your life by participating in the activities you always wanted to do.

Maybe you do not know where to start. Well, there are many ways to discover new talents. You can watch a video, read a book, or join a group. The easiest is just to try something out. You may surprise yourself, like I did. Do not let past failures stop you from going back to that old interest.

You never know where it may lead or the joy it can bring.
