I Have My Way And I Trust It

What I did when most “friends” made their bets that I will fail

They are my friends but I knew that they are just full of insecurities.

I was reviewing for the bar exam then when they started giving me unsolicited advice on dos and don’ts. Words that have been disguised as friendly guidance but aimed at ruining my momentum and confidence. I just knew it.

They told me that I can’t do the review alone and I need to enroll in a big review school when they know that I don’t have the funds. They went further telling me to stay away from my family when they know that I cling to my family for inspiration and comfort. There should be zero distractions according to them.

They also warned me that if I will not follow, the chance is big, that I will not pass the Philippine bar examinations. I was wondering all along because they are not even lawyers!

I did not listen to them, the result?

The title “Attorney” has been appended before my name after 6 months of rigorous study, 4 consecutive Sundays of examination, and another 6 months of waiting.

How I made it possible?

I simply walked away, locked myself, and I remembered doing these 4 steps:

1.) I first transformed myself into a bumblebee

The bumblebee is big, heavy, and with small wings which made a Swiss aerodynamicist conclude that it shouldn’t fly. The said scientist has the research and mathematical calculations to prove his claim. But the problem is, no one told the bumblebee so it continued to fly.

I told myself that I am a bumblebee. I will not listen to the research and calculations. I know that I can fly so I will continue to fly!

I then just continued to study, on my own.

2.) I guarded my confidence

Taking the bar examinations or any other examination is a psychological war. Your knowledge and tools won’t get you far without your confidence. It is the faith in your abilities that will help you survive.

Walking away soonest from the “friends” so as not to ruin my confidence was the best move that I made.

3.) I told myself that being a non-conformist is ok

There are 101 ways to skin a cat and the unpopular way may even be the better way.

My plan contained the 101st way to study but my intuition says I’m good. I trusted my gut feeling. I followed the unusual path that I knew beforehand will still lead to the same destination.

I disregarded the norms. It’s just the same law books that we bar reviewees read anyway.

3.) I disregarded the statistics

Historical data can project the result of the things that we do. Just like my friends when they calculated the probability of me becoming a lawyer using their data.

However, such data can only serve as a guide to predict the outcome. It can never predict reality with absolute certainty.

I am the reality. I don’t need data because I will be giving the new data!

Parting words:

I just wanted to share with you that I confidently sang Frank Sinatra’s My Way during the testimonial dinner given to me as a new lawyer.

The record shows, I took the blows, and did it my way

Yes, my friends, the heartfelt victory that I did it MY WAY.

Don’t let society limit us. We are different, and we do things differently.
