I Have Discovered the Secret of Golf

We have now completed the third week of May. I have managed to play 16 rounds of golf so far in the 2022 season.

My first game was at Timber Ridge Golf Course on April 12. Since then I have played Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club, Trillium Wood Golf Club, Roundel Glen Golf Course, and my home course, Black Bear Ridge.

Your Game Lies Mainly at the Range

One of the many benefits of being a member at Black Bear Ridge is that we have full access to two driving ranges and numerous other practice areas. There are stacks of range balls at each practice area for all to use. It is the perfect set-up for those looking to improve their game.

Golf is Lots of Fun Even When You Can’t Play 18

With such great facilities at Black Bear Ridge, I enjoy going there even on days when I can’t play 18. I hit balls at the range for an hour or so and then spend about a half hour practicing chipping and putting at one of the practice greens. Oh yeah, there might be a beverage and something to eat thrown in there too. After all, sitting on their patio overlooking #9 green is a petty nice place to relax after a strenuous workout.

Try Hitting Two Balls to the Same Place Two Times in a Row

When practicing, I use my rangefinder to get the exact yardage to the different flags on the driving range and see which club gets me closest to the pin on a consistent basis. (As any amateur golfer can attest, on a consistent basis is much harder to achieve than one would think.)

I always start with my sand wedge and work my way up through most of the clubs in my bag leaving the driver as the last club I practice with. I hit a minimum of 10 balls per club.

Hit the Ball Like a Rockstar

While hitting balls at the range yesterday, I wore a set of over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones and listened to some tunes through my iPhone. That was a total blast. I loved hitting balls with Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac singing in my ear. The headphones felt great — not too hot at all and they didn’t slip around during my swing. They are now part of my regular gear for practice days.

My visits to the driving range and practice areas have really paid off. My consistency has improved. I am hitting more fairways and greens. I am losing fewer balls and, sometimes, I am even scoring better. If there was an odometer on the golf cart, I could also say that my distance travelled per game is down too.

Practice for What? For a Hole-In-One of Course!

I made a hole in one while playing my 9th round this season. It happened at Trillium Wood Golf Club. It was a cool damp day and the two buddies that I was playing with suggested that we play from the Red Tee blocks, so we did. My hole-in-one was made on hole #2, an 81-yard par 3. I was hitting my sand wedge. Not too far but, hey, a hole-in-one is a hole-in-one, right?

Two So Far — Hopefully More to Come

I was talking to a friend after my recent hole-in-one, and he jokingly called me “Ace”. I laughed and told him that that was my second “ace”. I made a hole-in-one at Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club a few years back. That one was on hole #15, a 125-yard uphill, over-water par 3. I was hitting an 8 iron.

Two Albatrosses — That’s Amazing

This same friend who called me “Ace” told me that he has never had a hole-in-one in all the years that he has played golf. And this guy is a very low cap or scratch golfer. He did say, however, that he has had two albatrosses.

Getting an albatross, also called a double eagle, is WAY more difficult to achieve than getting a hole-in-one. Getting two, well that is simply amazing.

Whenever you suit up to play 18 holes of golf you are going to be teeing it up on a par 3 at least 5 to 6 times. That means that every time you play golf, you have 5 or 6 chances of making a hole-in-one.

Now think of an albatross. That’s 2 strokes on a par 5 or a hole-in-one on a par 4. Not very many golfers can reach a par 5 in two let alone hole it.

I hope that you are enjoying the game of golf as much as I am.

Don’t forget — keep your head down and put a nice smooth swing on it. And for goodness sake, don’t forget to finish!
