I hated my first opportunity to work from home — why it’s different now
And, what’s changed?
I remember it so crystal clear. I was working my 9-to-5 job. I had been at that employer about 4 years, I think.
The company was thinking about setting up a work-from-home team and they were putting all the workers through a trial at home to see how they liked it.
I was so excited and I got a chance to work from home for about 1–2 weeks if I recall correctly.
I absolutely hated it.
Here’s why.
Why I hated working from home in my 9-to-5 job?
This was probably ten years ago. So, the remote work landscape was much different.
Systems were clunky.
And, the experience of talking to customers from home just wasn’t the same as at the office.
My home office was in my bedroom in my small 900-square-foot apartment that I shared with a roommate.
I’d take a break from work and collapse on my bed.
There was no separation of work/life balance and this was felt.
I only lived about a 2-minute drive from my job so the commute I saved was no big deal.
Cell phones were much different back in 2010 so there was no listening to a podcast in the background or even listening to satellite radio or anything like that.
And, work was busy so there wasn’t any downtime, not even to read the news online.
When my time working from home ended and I returned to the office, I was elated.
The experience was much different than I imagined and I was a little sad that I didn’t like it.
Working from home then vs now
It’s a totally different climate now, working from home.
First of all, if you’re working from home as a 9-to-5'er, the internet is just so much better than ten years ago.
Phones are better.
Apps, entertainment, blogging platforms, music, it’s just all 100% better online today.
For me, I work for myself so here are the biggest differences…
- Start my work day when I want
- Work from my desk, couch, or bed (or Starbucks, frankly)
- Take half the week off and make up for it on Sunday working beachside with my laptop
- Long breaks in the middle of the day to cook dinner (today I prepared pot roast and it took about an hour including a quick trip to the store)
- Mid-day breaks to go swimming with my son
- Squeezing in some last-minute content for the day because I truly love what I do (it’s 11:37 pm now as I type this)
So, the biggest change is just flexibility and independence.
I think if I were working for an employer from home, I’d enjoy things like:
- Dressing casual from the waist down (pajama bottoms, cozy socks and house slippers)
- Keeping my cup of hot or iced coffee topped off all-day
- Taking micro-breaks throughout the day
- Working outside
- Taking naps at lunchtime and eating lunch while I’m on the clock while working
- Listening to a podcast or music in the background
- Working on a treadmill desk
This is what I imagine at least.
Anyway, technology changes, and the work climate changes.
I love my work schedule and my life as an entrepreneur. I feel blessed to have gone for my dream and had it work out.
Do you work from home? What do you really think about it?
