I HATE the Hour Change

Can we choose one time and stick with it?

The hour changed in Ireland again during the night. We’re back at GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) and done with the IST (Irish Summer Time) until next year.

Why do we need to have these time changes? I absolutely hate them. My body takes at least a few weeks to get used to the new time, and meanwhile, everything is out of whack. Adding young kids to the mix makes everything even harder. My youngest was awake at 3:30 AM this morning, GMT. That means it was 4:30 AM for her body clock (which isn’t unusual for her), but we’re still trying to live the day by the GMT clock. It’s tough. Everybody is exhausted.

I struggle to understand the need to change the hour — there’s already extended daylight time during summer. Mid-December, it’s still dark at 8 AM and completely dark again before 5 PM. But in mid-summer, the nights are bright, and the days start early, so I can’t understand daylight saving. At the height of summer, it’s still bright at 10 PM… and the day begins before 5 AM (of course, in ISM, but would 6 AM be a bad time for starting the day?) I can’t help but wonder if this was some sort of attempt to make us humans even more productive — to suck that tiny little bit of extra juice out of us. I’m sure the real reason lies somewhere there.

At least for me, it doesn’t work, though. I’m not more productive because the clock is brought forward an hour. I’m not less productive, either. I am annoyed for a few weeks twice a year because of the change, for sure, and I am less productive during these weeks, too. I feel more tired; the whole day feels wrong (which it is, especially for those of us who enjoy our routines). After a few weeks, my body adapts, and all is back to normal.

I don’t care if we stick with GMT, IST, or any other letters that may be. All I want is for the time not to change anymore. Brazil stopped changing the time a few years ago — I now envy their wise move. Can we do that in Ireland, too, please?
