Summary

Destiny Harris discusses overcoming morning motivation struggles by focusing on work and ignoring negative emotions.

Abstract

The article by Destiny Harris addresses the common issue of lacking motivation in the morning. Despite the absence of a "magic potion" for motivation, Harris emphasizes the importance of pushing through the emotional resistance and starting work. She acknowledges that feelings can be deceptive and unhelpful, suggesting that gratitude may not always be sufficient to overcome the sense of feeling down. Harris advocates for a pragmatic approach: beginning the day's tasks regardless of emotional state, as motivation is transient and unreliable. Opinions

  • Motivation is not a constant and should not be solely relied upon to accomplish tasks.
  • Feelings can be misleading and counterproductive to one's daily productivity.
  • The act of getting up and starting work is a practical strategy to deal with a lack of motivation.
  • Gratitude can sometimes fail to improve one's mood, and it's normal to feel down despite acknowledging life's positives.
  • Persistence in work can help overcome initial feelings of demotivation, with the expectation that emotions will eventually shift.

I Had Zero Motivation This Morning

Here’s what I did to cope

I got up, took my puppies out, and got to work.

There’s no magic potion for dealing with a lack of motivation when you have obligations and goals. Most of the time, all you can do sometimes is get straight to work and ignore the downward emotions.

Here’s the thing about our feelings: they’re misleading and unproductive. Not all of them, of course, but many of them.

If you woke up this morning, that’s something to be grateful for, but let’s be real, sometimes the gratitude trick doesn’t work, and we still feel like sh*t.

Don’t worry about it. Just get to work. The feelings will pass.

Motivation will come and go. Never depend on it.
