I Had an Existential Crisis — Triggered by Justin Bieber This Time.

Of all the things and people, I didn’t think Justin Bieber would trigger questions about my life’s purpose and send me down a rabbit hole of existential crisis.

If you aren’t aware, the Canadian pop star was recently diagnosed with a rare disorder called the Ramsey hunt syndrome — a virus-mediated paralysis of the facial muscles.

Following this unfortunate development, Justin had to cancel his upcoming tours and released a heartfelt video explaining his difficult decision to his fans.

I have not even heard his songs, to be honest. I am far too old for his kind of music. But I was curious and hence watched the video.

He started by explaining his predicament and the chicken pox virus’s damage to his facial muscles. He then apologized for cancelling the show.

Toward the end, he said he is taking some time to recover so he can return to doing what he was born to do.

To do what he was born to do?

My brain went insane.

Wow! That’s a bold statement. How can people be convinced that their existence has a singular purpose?”

“How do they choose one path over the countless other possibilities?”

“Don’t they fear missing out on an even spectacular choice?”

“How and when does one even realize their life’s purpose?”

Why, for god’s sake, don’t I know what to do with my life??”

“What if I never realise my purpose and look back in the end with nothing but regret?”

“Maybe that video was scripted by his PR team.”

“Don’t say that! You can see that he means it.”

“I am sure he has days he wants to quit.. not show up.. and pursue something else. He must be bored doing the same thing over and over.”

“I definitely am bored with my life.”

“Surely, I am not the only one feeling this way. I hope to god not.”

Thankfully I was brought back from my spiralling thoughts with an invitation for dinner.

Hot, crispy, perfectly browned dosas glazed with a generous sprinkle of ghee and a side of spicy chicken curry awaited.

“You know what, Nobody is born to do anything.”

“Human existence is a random event, and we try to attach meaning to everything to justify it.”

“Like some wise person once said, maybe there is no inherent meaning to life other than the meaning you choose to give it.”

“Maybe nothing matters eventually.”

“Besides, life with dosa and chicken curry is a life well-lived. Isn’t it?”

That was my ghee-intoxicated brain talking now. “Purpose is so overrated.”

And, I agreed as I polished off the plate.

So have you found your purpose in life? What is it?

If not, does it bother you?

What is a life well-lived to you? Let me know. I am eager to listen.

Cheers!
