I Had A TikTok Hit 1.7 Million Views But I’d Rather Be Tweeting
Putting my energy where it counts
Maybe I’m crazy.
I had a viral (by my standards) TikTok post a few months ago, but I’m still choosing to put most of my energy into Twitter/X, Medium, and my newsletter.
Here’s why.
The Story
I started experimenting with TikTok in 2021.
My niche is Canadian football schemes and techniques. I enjoy writing about the topic, and I like creating video content as well.
The challenge I found, however, is that most football videos require WIDTH. With TikTok, everything is vertical.
So the formatting wasn’t coming out right. I fixed this by zooming in and cropping the video, isolating the Defensive Linemen. This is the only position on the field this works for.
Through this new lens, I was able to grow my TikTok account. The numbers started piling up.
Until one day, I posted a video of a Defensive Lineman using a fancy pass rush move.
The views skyrocketed, climbing all the way to 1.7 million.
My follower count rose as well, nearing the 10k mark based primarily on this one video alone.
It was what I had always wanted. (Or so I thought.)
The Aftermath
I’ll admit, it was a thrill.
An all-time dopamine high.
I wanted more of it.
So I tried to repeat this success with future videos. The numbers continued to look pretty good, but nowhere near the 1.7 million.
My obsession with duplicating these results caused my content to grow more and more narrow.
It wasn’t what I had set out to do.
So I shifted gears.
Assessing My Goals
I had to ask myself:
What are my goals as an online writer?
It’s not my goal to duplicate the same narrow video over and over again just to rack up large numbers.
I began writing online to share my knowledge about Canadian football.
Sure, I’d love to make some money by writing online about my favourite hobby, but that can’t be the primary goal.
When I’m doing it properly — sitting down to write a thoughtful piece about a belief I have around Canadian football — the words just flow from my fingers.
Time melts away.
I’m not here to publish fancy highlights.
So I made sure to focus my energy on the things I enjoy and create content I’m proud of.
This includes writing on Twitter/X, Medium, and working on my newsletter.
I still create video content, and still post on TikTok from time to time. But it’s not my primary focus.
I think this mindset will help me win in the end.
