I Had a Dream…Martin Luther King Was the US President

His wisdom is truly missed

MLK Jr is still an inspiration for millions around the world.

When I look at current heads of state, despair fills my soul. It appears that fraud, deceit and cruelty have prevailed over empathy, justice and decency.

King was selfless and in these days of great turmoil, the following quote shows us what we are missing.

“Life most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?” (MLK)

Reading about inspirational leaders of the past helps me stay hopeful.

Martin Luther King Jr was the best president we never had but in my dream, he is leading the US and the world.

In this post, I will simply narrate what it would be like to have MLK as the leader of the free world.

Moral Leadership

In time of crisis, we want presidents to provide us with moral clarity and support. Imagine if we had MLK guide us through Covid-19. He would show compassion towards all those who have been affected and be there every step of the way.

This year is also about social justice and I believe the Black Lives Matter movement would have found a wise leader.

Brilliant diplomacy

MLK was interested in different culture and was open-minded. Leaders around the world would have sought his guidance.

He went to Ghana in 1957 to attend the swearing-in Ceremony of Kwame Nkruma and was inspired by Ghandi. King was also an important figure in the Pan-Africanism movement (the idea of people of African descent should be unified).

These examples show that the US foreign policy would have been peaceful, coherent and in step with the mood of the people.

It is indeed very important to have good relations with various nations for harmony to thrive.

Imagine how the world would be without meaningless wars? The focus would remain on taking care of our planet.

Chief legislator

The president shapes public policy and can suggest or request congress enact laws he believes are needed.

King was a great listener and knew the importance of working with people even if they may not share the same values.

One of the most contentious issue is currently Medicare for all. It is indeed terrible that in the richest country on earth, citizens are dying because they have inadequate healthcare.

Only a man like Martin Luther King could find a solution to this unfair situation because he was trustworthy.

Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege.

Conclusion

Various politicians often use quotes from Martin Luther King, the greatest president that never was. It would be nice to actually see them implement his philosophy.

Until then, I will carry on dreaming.
