The More You Write

I Had 125 Articles Earn $1 or More in February

Don’t Underestimate the Potential of Frequent Publishing

I may not have this much cash coming in monthly, but I’m always working hard toward it. Photo: Bing Image Creator

Just to be upfront about this article: This one is 100% about making money and how to do it in a productive, consistent way. If you don’t like reading writing pieces about how to succeed with your writing income, you can stop here. I almost always get somebody in the comments who reminds me that they’re not here primarily to earn money.

Great, good for you. I get that a lot of people are only here on Medium just for fun. Or to express their creativity. I respect that. I enjoy writing for those reasons as well. But I also don’t mind being paid closer to what I’m worth. Emphasis on “closer”.

That’s because as full-time writers, I feel that we are worth far more than we’re paid. Regardless of that fact, I love it here and appreciate all of the readers and writers I’ve had the pleasure to get to know during the past year.

Any coaching I offer or writing tips I write about are given freely because I care about everyone here and want other writers to earn what they’re worth. Or again, as close to it as possible. Medium isn’t set up to make anyone rich.

But if you know of another blogging platform that’s earning people more than $2500-$3500 a month, please share with the group. We’d love to know about it. However, I suspect there isn’t a better option to pay writers than Medium.

That being said, if one of your goals is to earn income for your hard work and creativity, there are ways to maximize your results. Over the past two years I’ve figured a number of these out and I’m happy to share them with you.

I’ve written 970 articles in 25 months of writing. There’s step number one. Write often and publish frequently. Create a portfolio of work that speaks for itself. I’ll put my productivity and body of work against any other Medium writer’s during the past 800 days or so.

If you can publish engaging, informative, well-written writing on a daily basis, do it. If you love writing as much as I do, it should be a pleasure to put more of it into the world. Bonus points if you use humor and bring laughter to a tough, difficult world.

It was a hell of a great month in February. I’m always pushing to improve, though.

There are numerous ways to reach a four-figure month in earnings on Medium. But they all start with one thing in common: The more you write, the more potential earnings there are for you. Activity breeds activity.

It’s important to write well in addition to writing often. The details are important. Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting matter. Use correctly-cited pictures that are interesting and entertaining.

Titles are important. They should be easily noticed, clever, or funny. Even titles that are controversial can help grab a reader’s attention. Don’t be afraid to use a well-placed curse word to help a reader stop scrolling and click on your article.

Being a good neighbor is important. It’s one thing to build a larger following, but it’s quite another to keep people interested. Readers want to be acknowledged and appreciated.

I have 508 subscribers on my main profile, plus 159 more on this second profile. They’re the main reason I had 125 articles earn a dollar or more last month. Your subscribers WANT to know when you publish something new.

As far as building your following, you can do it one of two ways: Allow readers and other writers to discover your work organically. Take what you can get and return the favor after they come to you first. Don’t put any extra time into getting to know more people first.

If you take the initiative and spend the time to grow your following, you’ll become a force within your writing community. People will notice you if you work hard daily at it.

Again, these tips and suggestions are not for everyone. We all have different levels of desire and motivation to succeed. As well as different definitions of what success means to us in our Writer’s Journey.

For me, success is writing as often as possible while maintaining a solid, enjoyable quality of each and every piece. It’s being a good neighbor to my writing community and paying it forward to anyone who is open to my tips and experiences.
