I Got My First Tip on Medium!

Wow, this feels great.

I have been writing on Medium since 2020. I write under this account as well as a pen name. This year has definitely been my lowest earning year, but I have high hopes for 2023.

I remember the first time my story went “viral” on here. It currently stands at a total earning of about $3,500. And now, I’ve spent a lot more of my efforts writing under my own name.

This year, while earning way less than in previous years, I feel like I have written some of my best work. I am proud of the value that I provide here. Sharing my self-publishing journey with you has made me feel really useful. And that’s very fulfilling.

Sometimes, it is hard to know what your impact is, especially on the internet. But then, something really great happens. You read a grateful comment. You see that someone buys one of your books or leaves a good review. Or, you get a tip on Medium after you completely forgot you set the option up in the first place.

I got my first tip on Medium and it felt incredible. I mean, someone read my work and said, “Hey, this deserves monetary compensation.” Could anything feel better to a writer?

If you’re writing on Medium and you want to be successful, focus on your reader. What do they want to read? What stories are you writing that really land with people? Create more of those.

And maybe… just maybe. Read the comments. And respond. I do not normally do this, because I am scared of trolls and all of that. But I think engagement is important, too. I think it is important to build relationships here so that articles are not simply words spilled out into the void.

So, I got my first tip on Medium. Thank you very much to the person who gave it. I hope to write more this year. I hope to help even more.
