I was at the bookstore a while back looking for a new book to read. I eventually found one and took it to the counter to pay.

At the counter, I noticed a sign that said "20% Student Discount".

I thought I might as well give it a go. What's the worst that could happen? They could say no. No big deal.

But when you ask, sometimes people say yes.

It also helps you get out of your comfort zone and be more able to handle rejection.

Anyway, I don't look much like a student. Maybe a very mature student, but not really.

So, I asked.

"Can I get the 20% student discount?"

The assistant looked at me a bit suspiciously.

"Are you a student?", she asked.

The look on her face made it obvious that she didn't think I was one.

I replied, "Yes, I'm a student of life".

She laughed. A lot. In fact, it took her a while to compose herself.

I told her that I really was a student of life.

She that as I wasn't a real student I couldn't get the 20% discount. But she added that my answer deserved a 10% discount.

We both laughed. And I got the 10% discount.

It was a fun encounter and it seemed to brighten her day. She was still smiling when I left.

So, what's the moral of the story?

Ask for a discount. Don't get too uptight about it. Have fun. Be a little cheeky. Smile. You mostly won't get the discount. But sometimes you will.
