I Give Up Writing Long Stories on Medium

I can’t anymore.

I love writing. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be here.

Despite my love for writing, I give up writing 1,000-word stories every day.

Here is why:

1. I handle three jobs on the side, and I am pursuing one of the most demanding majors in the world (pharmacy).

I am a busy person; I admit that. That is why writing long stories are a massive con for me. Writing a big story on Medium would take me more than five hours to publish. Not only do I have to write the story, but I have re-read my entire story once I finish. Proofreading my story is the hardest part of the process. Correcting all the spelling and grammar is a cherry on top of the cake.

2. I don’t want to bore the readers to death

Time is scarce. The fact that a reader sacrificed their time to read your story is a considerable feat itself. I’m sure readers don’t want to waste their time reading a long story. They crave shorter stories and variety.

I believe you could better establish a lesson or main point through a shorter story.

Despite all this, I make an exception for personal stories. Those stories are not fabricated or researched, and they come from your own heart.

3. I can write more stories in the process

By writing short stories, I save myself from exhaustion and tiredness. One of my stories on Medium, 3 Steps To Be Successful in College, was over 1,200 words. I enjoyed writing the story, but by the time it was finished, I was exhausted.

As I finished typing and proofreading the article you are currently reading, I am not exhausted. I feel good. What makes me feel better is that I didn’t waste a lot of your time adding unnecessary details. I went straight to the main point.

By no means am I saying stop writing long stories! There are many long stories on Medium that are breathtaking and outstanding. I am saying that if you are busy, don’t stress yourself writing long stories every day.
