I Found One More Writing Opportunity To Write as a Freelance Writer

Why Not Write for Both Platforms

I signed up for Substack without knowing how the platform works; the only information I knew was that the company was founded in San Francisco, CA, in 2017. [1]

I was never a person to wait and figure out all the details before trying something new; I would join first and figure out the facts later. I’m not sure if that is the best way to create a writing business, but that was always how I did things.

Some people might have done their research first and joined only after knowing all the facts. I always thought that if I waited, that would be time wasted between starting and figuring out what comes next.

The only thing I needed to know to start was that Substack is a writing platform where I could create a revenue stream. It’s been about two days since I started, and I have seven articles I wrote before I became a part of the Medium Partner Program republished on Substack; one of the articles is a paid article, while the other six are free to read.

Writing for Two Platforms

I’m almost at the 200 story count on Medium with the Medium Partner Program since writing continuously since November 2021. I would also like to write every day on Substack and gain subscribers to my Newsletter.

I am averaging about 35 articles per month on Medium. If I can write at least 22 articles on Medium and 13 on Substack per month, I think I’d be able to write on both platforms. What is helping is that I am republishing some of the first articles I wrote on Medium.

Of course, I corrected some Grammar errors and quite a few passive voice passages in my previous articles before republishing them on Substack.

Exciting Time to Write

Writing on Medium and Substack has provided me with the opportunity to be paid as a writer I didn’t even know existed a year ago. Just having the chance to write is exciting. Both companies have leveled the playing field for individual authors, writers, and independent publishers.

I connected my stripe account on Substack today and have one article behind a paywall.

Business Models for Substack and Medium

I like the business models for both Substack and Medium. Writers on Substack get paid through the number of subscriptions they can generate through their Newsletter. The responsibility for bringing in subscribers is solely the writer’s responsibility, but the platform provides the means to find subscribers.

I would imagine that it would be much harder if someone did it entirely with their website and blog. A medium platform is also good because you will continue to earn income from your stories through member readership if you keep on writing. Both Substack and Medium are long-term writing to generate revenue, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

It was always, give me a chance, and I’ll work for it.

Takeaway

I would never have known about Substack if Medium’s authors didn’t share their successes on Substack. Some may see it differently, but I always welcome authors sharing their financial successes with their writing because it gives me hope. I also assumed they started with zero income on Medium and Substack.

I would be worried if I didn’t read success stories on Medium. It’s always nice to hear success stories.

Final Thought

I’m writing on Substack and Medium every day and taking courses on Udemy and Coursera; I had to give up something because I still teach full-time. I’m still stuck on my 3rd short story out of the 10 I wanted to write before I publish all of it as a set.

The good news is that I have a road map and a plan to generate income as a writer. I knew the only revenue-generating stream was my Amazon workbooks and Teachers Pay Teachers store. Today, I know multiple ways to make money online as a writer.
