I Found 15 Tags With Insanely Low Competition
One has 4,000,000 followers and less than 200,000 stories!

Before we dive in, let me explain my data a bit.
- I calculate value by trying to find how many readers exist per story. This means: followers/stories=value.
- Bucket refers to the overall niche for each tag. I consider there to be 9 main niches on Medium. I have also divided each bucket into sub-buckets.
- I collected my tags from three places: The Tag Explore Page, The 101 Tags Shown at Account Sign-up, and Competitor Research
To illustrate why tag research is important, I want you to look at these two tags:

Clearly, using Artificial Intelligence is a much better choice than AI.
Here’s my favorite example of a bad tag:

Anyways, all this to say, the tags you use are important.
In this article, I’ve found 15 tags with little to no competition and at least 1,000 followers. Each section looks at its competition value, it’s niche, and it’s subniche. I also include a screenshot of today’s top stories in each tag so you can get a feel for what does well in the tag. (With these screenshots, it’s hard to fit two rows in one frame. Sorry for the cutoffs!)
One of these tags has almost 4 million followers!

The 15 Tags With the Least Competition
Digital Life
Followers: 340k Stories: 4.8k Value: 71 Bucket: Culture Sub Bucket: Cultural Studies
I am honestly not sure what this tag is supposed to be about. It has some crazy engagement and seems to be a tag you can slap onto just about anything. I’m definitely adding this one to my list of tags to try.

Basic Income
Followers: 432k Stories: 6.1k Value: 71 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Economics
I know absolutely nothing about economics, and I’m not going to pretend to. If you know what Basic Income is, feel free to drop an explanation in the comments — or, write an article on it. With 71 readers per article, it doesn’t get better than that! Literally, it doesn’t; this is the best competition rate on this list.

Android Development
Followers: 209k Stories: 4.1k Value: 51 Bucket: Software Dev Sub Bucket: Programming
Funnily enough, Apple and Android always seem neck and neck in all their tags. Just below this is the Apple equivalent, though Apple is bigger than Andriod — just barely.

iOS Development
Followers: 203k Stories: 4.6k Value: 44 Bucket: Software Dev Sub Bucket: Programming
See, it’s not too far behind Android here! I guess we’ll never know for sure which product is better.

Math
Followers: 621k Stories: 16.6k Value: 37 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Mathematics
This is one of the 101 topics that show up when you sign up for a Medium account. The engagement here isn’t too bad! Maybe you could beat these stats with a killer (and super nerdy) math article.

Photojournalism
Followers: 146k Stories: 4.4k Value: 33 Bucket: Media Sub Bucket: Photography
This is probably the niche-ist niche on this list. Even if it is a super specific interest, it’s clearly got a lot of fans and decent engagement.

Makers
Followers: 301k Stories: 9.1k Value: 33 Bucket: Technology Sub Bucket: Makers
Again, I’ve got no clue what this is. If you know, feel free to enlighten me.

Internet of Things
Followers: 954k Stories: 31k Value: 31 Bucket: Technology Sub Bucket: Gadgets
This is another tag that seems super general. Maybe I’m misunderstanding it, but it seems like you could slap this tag on any Internet-related topic.

Self Driving Cars
Followers: 600k Stories: 20k Value: 30 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Transportation
I can’t say this topic is something I have much interest in, but clearly, nearly a million readers on Medium do! There’s absolutely a market for more self-driving cars articles.

True Crime
Followers: 634k Stories: 23k Value: 27 Bucket: Society & Media Sub Bucket: News & Law
Depending on how you slant your article, this could exist in a few different niches. That Ted Bauer article definitely got a click from me. Also, I immigrated to Brazil last year. Did you know True Crime is a very American interest? It’s pretty taboo here.

Frontend Engineering
Followers: 1k Stories: 38 Value: 26 Bucket: Software Dev Sub Bucket: Programming
I’m really exposing my blind spots here in this article. Again, I’ve got no clue what this is about. It is the smallest tag on this list, but look at that engagement! If you know anything about this, you’d be stupid not to try your luck here.

Style
Followers: 518k Stories: 21k Value: 25 Bucket: Culture Sub Bucket: Fashion
For the most part, this refers to clothes. Style can also refer to the way a writer writes across their articles. I’m not sure which topic these 518,000 readers followed for.

Space
Followers: 1.2M Stories: 50k Value: 24 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Science
I’m really shocked to see this topic on this list. I would’ve thought Space would be talked about much more. Then again, I rarely ever see space-related articles on Medium.

Science
Followers: 3.9M Stories: 184k Value: 21 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Science
Again, what?! 4 million followers and less than 200k stories? It just doesn’t add up. We need to fix this ratio. Start publishing your best science-related stories.

Software Engineering
Followers: 1.8M Stories: 88K Value: 20 Bucket: Software Dev Sub Bucket: Programming
Engagement on this topic seems a bit mixed here. However, this is a strong topic with lots of sub-niches under it’s umbrella.

Justice
Followers: 617K Stories: 33K Value: 19 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Equality
I’m seeing some great engagement in this tag. If you know a lot about the law, equality, or anything of that sort, this could be a great niche to try!

Sexuality
Followers: 1.1M Stories: 62K Value: 18 Bucket: Life Sub Bucket: Sexuality
This tag goes in many different directions. Just from these stories, we’ve got politics, tv shows, an affair, and pure erotica. Talk about a mixed bag.

Ideas
Followers: 1.1M Stories: 63K Value: 17 Bucket: Self Improvement Sub Bucket: Productivity
I could see this tag being added to literally any article. Clearly, there’s not much of a connecting theme between these articles. This one is also going on my list of tags to try.

Cooking
Followers: 699K Stories: 42K Value: 17 Bucket: Life Sub Bucket: Food
Who doesn’t love food? Just looking at these pictures is making me hungry.

Data Engineering
Followers: 420K Stories: 25K Value: 17 Bucket: Technology Sub Bucket: Data Science
For a tag this big, this engagement is disappointing. Or maybe, this topic is just desperate for a strong new writer to take the scene. No offense to these authors, but these articles look plain boring compared to those delicious food articles. Who would’ve thought data engineers aren’t also graphic designers?

Language
Followers: 804K Stories: 51K Value: 16 Bucket: Culture Sub Bucket: Language
This is another super vague tag that can be taken in a million different directions. We’ve got programming languages, foreign languages, grammar, and even politics.

World
Followers: 855K Stories: 54K Value: 16 Bucket: World Sub Bucket: World
Well, we all live in the World, right? Bogdan Maftel is absolutely killing this tag. That could be you if you published here!

Equality
Followers: 625K Stories: 41K Value: 15 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Equality
If you use this tag with justice, bam! Two low competition tags on one article. Easy as pie.

Women in Tech
Followers: 549K Stories: 39K Value: 14 Bucket: Society & Technology Sub Bucket: Equality, Gender, & Technology
As you can probably tell by my ignorance in all things tech — I am not a woman in tech. Mad props to those who are. Maybe it’s time to write about your experience. We’ve got 550k other women waiting to hear from you.

Gun Control
Followers: 103K Stories: 7.5K Value: 14 Bucket: Society Sub Bucket: Politics
All I’ll say about this tag is I am very glad I live in Brazil now and do not have to worry about being part of a shooting. If you have more to say, now’s your time to shine.
