I Finally Reached My First 1,000 Followers and I Feel Unstoppable

It took me eight months to get here, and I’m reflecting heavily on the journey

Writing for eight months straight without knowing how the journey is going to go can be an incredibly scary feeling. This is precisely what happened when I was deployed in the Middle East.

I couldn’t make YouTube videos, so I took on writing for Medium, and once I found out, I could make money, I was instantly hooked.

It’s never been all about the followers. It’s more so about the reads and the number of people that I’m able to make an impact on. The fact that 1,000 readers have had the motivation to click follow on my account blows my mind.

Never had I ever thought that I could run my own blog and attract this many people. After hitting 1,000 followers, I know that anything from here on out is possible.

How I Started My Medium Career

Here are my current enhanced stats, and I’ve finally achieved over 1,000 followers. I grew tremendously by writing 275 articles and writing 1.22k responses to my fellow writers’ stories.

Engagement and constant output are critical for growth on the platform.

Follower Journey

My journey started with 15 followers after month one. In the ensuing months, I gained some traction, and my followers looked like so:

February — 15

March — 102

April — 406

May — 552

June — 667

July — 770

August — 890

September — 1,000

One of my biggest challenges was not having a niche, so I wrote stories of all types. You don’t have to see growth in a straight line. It’s going to be all over the place.

For example, I wrote stories about Medium, relationships in the military, and running!

The lesson:

Don’t worry too much in the beginning. Worrying about views or sticking to a niche early on will only kill your momentum, and you’ll fall behind in posting stories.

The quicker you can make writing a habit for you, the faster that you’ll be able to get into a flow state and keep the ball rolling!

How I Plan to Continue Growing

There are three things I will do to maintain my growth.

  1. Write every single day (publish most days)
  2. Stay consistent to publications
  3. Learn and read consistently

Let me start by elaborating on each of these plans of action.

Write Every Day

Writing every single day is going to keep my skills crispy, and I’m going to continue to have my magic writing touch. If I slow down now, I may never get back into the zone (auto zone) and put out consistent quality content.

Daily writing is good for mental health and allows you to make connections when everything in life seems not to make sense.

Stay Consistent to Publications

Instead of posting among ten different publications (like I did at one point), I’m only going to be focusing on five max. It’s no use trying to post everywhere and ending up spreading myself thin.

When you’re a writer trying to reach your first 1k, you have to pick a few places to post and become the expert in your region. Compete with writers in your niche, not so much in terms of followers across a broad spectrum.

Learn and Read Consistently

Learning and reading consistently will enhance your mindset and put it into a growth mindset. When your mind is willing to grow, it is more likely to absorb all types of information across many different spectrums.

Take reading seriously. If you don’t put in the minutes or hours to read up on something that could help you in your life, then you’re not going to be inspired.

Inspiration can go a long way and keep you motivated on your journey of leveling up in life and becoming the person you want to be.

The Takeaway

No one can take away the words you’ve written on Medium. Your input into the world through the written word will stand out for years to come. Never stop writing.

I look at my 1,000 followers as something to be very proud of. But I won’t bask in this moment of glory forever. I plan on acknowledging it, celebrating it, and then moving on to the next milestone ahead (I’m thinking 2k followers!).

If you feel alone and unsure about where your writing career is going, reach out to me, and I’ll gladly text and Zoom chat with you if you’re willing.

Let’s grow together and share all we know with the world.
