I Enjoy Being Bad at Video Games
Why would anyone have fun doing something they are bad at?
I willingly admit I am horrible at video games. I love to play them, but I am so awful that people would probably pay me thinking that I am a comedy act. I yell at the tv as if it might magically make the game easier to boost my abilities. The truth is, I love that I am bad at them.
I can get lost in a good game for hours. I do not play games because I like the challenge it provides. If the game has a difficulty setting, you best believe I am putting it on the easiest difficulty. I love the stories that games provide. I can be transported to a new world full of things I could never actually do. The better the story, the more fun I usually have. I spent hundreds of hours in Pokémon games running in circles to hatch an elusive shiny.
When a game is too hard, it just isn’t fun. There are games out that that are ridiculously hard, just for the sake of being hard. While there is a group of gamers that actually like this, most players are not looking for a game that is designed to make them mad. I do not mind a moderate challenge, but some games I won’t even consider touching. Dark Souls is one of the games I just will not play. The original Legend of Zelda game on NES is another game that I will not play. I tried when I was a kid, and I was so confused that I shut it off and never touched it again.
So, you may be wondering exactly why it is that I like being bad at video games. I think it is because when I finally win, it is even more exciting. When I put in all the hours to get every single achievement in Oblivion on Xbox, I was over the moon. I never thought I would actually be able to do it. Not because the game was actually difficult, but because there was so much stuff I needed to complete. When I can forget about trying to be good at the games I am playing, I can take in the experience that the game has to offer better.
What games does a person who is admittedly bad play? I play almost anything except platformers. Platformers just make me unreasonably angry. I played a lot of Mario as a kid and that is where I leave them. I mostly play RPGs. I am a huge fan of Pokémon, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, and Animal Crossing. I still occasionally play the old point-and-click games like Syberia. Games like The Binding of Isaac are incredibly fun, in short bursts of time. If a game is fun, has a good story, or just challenging enough, I will likely spend way too much time playing it.
It doesn’t matter how good or bad a person is at video games. There is something out there that everyone will enjoy. You do not need to be a pro-gamer to have a great time. If a game is making you truly mad, just walk away. You can always watch a video of someone else playing it if you really want to know how it ends. You should be having fun, not wanting to break your TV.
