I Dreamt That We Had a Storage Unit Full of Stuff

And it was more like a nightmare

I had such a crazy dream last night!

Now, I’m not one to normally remember my dreams, but when I do, they are usually doozies and are full of the weirdest events and situations that could never be real.

For those that don’t know, Chris and I sold all of our possessions in 2017 and we each have just one or two totes of things that we deem important. These are stored at our respective parent's houses. Beyond that, we only own what we carry with us as travelers.

So, you can imagine that having a dream about owning a storage unit full of stuff could be quite stressful for me. And it was!

The dream (nightmare) goes like this

We had realized that the end of our housesitting gig was coming in a few days but we had forgotten that we had moved a whole storage container of stuff into their house when we arrived. So all of a sudden, it was panic time.

We had to get it all out of there before they came back!

We started pulling stuff out from cupboards and closets in an effort to try and gather our stuff together in one place. The problem was that we couldn’t remember what was ours and we were getting our stuff confused with the homeowners.

Then, a neighbor came by to tell us that there was a huge neighborhood yard sale coming up and suggested that we sell some of our stuff at it in order to downsize it. We decided that this was a good idea.

But first, word spread and other neighbors started coming into the home and looking through our stuff. At one point, both of us were trying to negotiate deals with numerous people that had come over to see what we had available.

This is when things got hectic. Trying to bargain, pack and figure out what was ours and what was the home-owners was super stressful. I even sold an item that wasn’t ours, and we got into an argument about it!

At some point, I came across a pair of skis. In my dream, they were identical to the exact skis that my dad owned for pretty much my whole life.

When I found them I announced, “Oh damn, I forgot we had these skis! You didn’t have to rent skis after all.”

I guess we had been skiing prior to this event?

We also were driving a black Toyota Tacoma that was identical to one that I owned (well really the bank did) back in a previous marriage about 15 years ago. I know it was the same one because we had a roll-out truck bed that my then-husband had built and customized.

Somehow, this truck was also stored in our storage unit!?

I’m telling you, it was so real and so bizarre! Not to mention it was STRESSFUL!

I woke up in a panicked state and was so thankful that it was all just a dream. But it got me thinking.

I’m so happy that we don’t have a bunch of stuff!

Since being back in Canada we helped Chris’ mom move her whole house. We are actually back visiting her now, which might be where this dream was born from. She has a lot of stuff and much of it is still in boxes in the basement in case they have to move again soon. They are renting and had to leave 2 different houses in the past 3 years because the families wanted to use the houses for their own use. It could happen again. So I don’t blame them for not getting entirely unpacked.

But since we arrived this time, I have witnessed her trying to look for a few different things in boxes and she couldn’t find the items. This is a nightmare for me! Even with the small amount of stuff that we have with us, I get annoyed when it takes me more than 10 minutes to find something in our luggage.

It happens more than you would imagine!

We have also been helping my parents to downsize a bunch of stuff and have reduced 2 small storage units down to one in the parking garage of their condo.

It seems that our reputation of being able to downsize has caught on since we are soon heading off to help a childhood friend of mine who claims she needs help. “I want to hire the Jill and Chris show to help me get rid of stuff.” She told me in a desperate phone call a couple of weeks back.

Only time will tell how that will go, but in the meantime, as long as the stuff isn’t ours, I really hope that I don’t have any more panic attacks like the one I woke up to this morning!
