The article discusses a phenomenon where multiple individuals report having dreams about nuclear war, exploring various explanations for these shared experiences.
Abstract
The author of the article, who enjoys researching unusual topics, stumbled upon a Reddit thread where numerous people described having vivid dreams of nuclear attacks with similar themes. These dreams often felt prophetic, featured a bright flash known as a pika-don, and included a sense of impending death and a future resembling the present. The article delves into potential reasons behind these common dreams, such as the statistical likelihood of shared dream themes, the symbolism of nuclear war reflecting current global issues like climate change, and the intriguing theory that dreams might offer glimpses into alternate realities. The author also ponders whether these dreams could be premonitions, inviting readers to share their own experiences with such dreams.
Opinions
The author suggests that the prevalence of nuclear war as a dream theme could be due to the collective fear of such an event, which is a latent part of many people's fears.
The article posits that the symbolism of nuclear war in dreams may represent the current state of the world, particularly the sense of powerlessness in the face of ecological devastation akin to a slow-motion nuclear holocaust.
Dreams are seen as a reflection of our subconscious fears and feelings, possibly indicating that people perceive the current era as an end-of-the-world scenario.
There is a consideration of the theory that dreams could provide insights into alternate realities, with the possibility that in another timeline, a nuclear war has already occurred.
The author remains skeptical about the prophetic nature of dreams, using a personal anecdote about a nonsensical dream involving Gene Simmons and Barry Manilow to illustrate that not all dreams have deeper meanings.
The article concludes with an open-ended question, leaving readers to contemplate the nature of these dreams and whether they could be warnings or mere coincidences.
I love to read about strange things online. Part of this is because it’s my job to do so, and part of it is because I view it as a “brain stretchy” thing that helps me write. Recently, I was on Reddit and started browsing the High Strangeness subreddit — and there was something interesting afoot.
I’ll drop the thread here:
Lo and behold, the message board lit up with a bunch of replies of people who piped up about dreaming of nuclear attacks — and they all had similar themes.
The other commenters pointed out that they also had similar dreams, complete with mentions of other cities.

People began to chime in that they had similar dreams that all had the same qualities:
It felt prophetic.
They were older in the dream than they were when they dreamt it.
The dreams all involved seeing a pika-don (bright white flash before a nuke hits), feeling pain, and realizing they were going to die.
In some cases, the dream also had elements of a future that were similar to where they are now.
Reading all these different stories made me wonder, what the fuck is going on?
As we all know, sometimes a dream is just a dream. The other day, I had a dream about Gene Simmons cooking waffles with me so that Barry Manilow could eat, but I’m fairly certain that’s just a dream.
I mean, Gene Simmons has no idea who I am. And I’m pretty sure that Barry Manilow is dead, so it’s not like he needs waffles. That’s not prophetic. As it turns out, yours truly just drank too much and left their playlist on while they slept.
Oops.
But, I digress. I couldn’t help shake the feeling that there was something to all these people having shared dreams about a nuclear holocaust.
So, there are several explanations that can be had here…
I decided to take a look at the explanations professionals could offer about the dreams people were having. Here’s what I found.
Statistically speaking, common dreams are bound to happen.
Did you ever have a dream about falling? Or getting embarrassed in school? Or having your teeth fall out? Congrats, so did millions of other people. Statistically speaking, at least a handful of people would have the same dream genre as you.
Believe it or not, nukes are scary enough to become a latent part of a person’s fears. It makes sense that people would dream about it in large quantities — at least, when you think about what they symbolize.
The symbolism of nuclear war also is pretty bang on for our world right now.
I mean, nuclear war symbolizes a behavior or act that is entirely mutually-assureed destruction. No one outlives a nuclear holocaust. Even if your area wasn’t directly hit, the ecological devastation that happens would end up wiping out your food supplies.
We are right now dealing with climate change that is doing a slow-mo of a nuclear holocaust. Eventually, our behavior on this planet will make it impossible for things to continue living. Our oceans will lose their oxygen. Our corals will die out. Then, trees will die. Then, we’re all fucked.
Much like with a nuclear war, we all feel powerless to do anything to stop it. How do we stop a bomb? How do we all stop consuming when our society is literally based on it? We can’t, not fast enough, anyway.
It’s often said that dreams can symbolize how we’re feeling. Maybe we’re seeing this time as the end of the world and our “dream minds” are reflecting that back at us?
Perhaps one of the most interesting theories is that our dreams could be a glimpse into an alternate reality.
So, I think I’ve spoken about this in my writing before, but I have recurring dreams of living in a world that is similar to ours, but has a very different timeline.
If you don’t want to get a full grasp, I’ll fill you in. For example, Newark in my dream is a beautiful, clean city that has a library and an Apple store with a direct, futuristic train to Manhattan.
By the Jersey Shore, there are giant purple metal statues that are supposed to look like a sea serpent on a field of grass left open for observation. There’s also a strip mall that has stores that are now dead retail here, such as Skinmarket and Natural Wonders.
Apparently, there’s an ongoing belief that dreams might give us a glance into alternate realities. I honestly could see this being what the dreams of nuclear war could be — especially when it’s a bunch of people dreaming of the same thing.
I mean, our civilization is as close as it’s ever been to nuclear war. Maybe in another reality, the morons in charge of global affairs decided to push the red button and ignite a bunch of nukes. It wouldn’t be a shock here.
Or, maybe it IS a premonition.
Here’s hoping it won’t be this.
So, uh, tell me…Who’s had these dreams? Anyone here?
