Summary

A traveler expresses dissatisfaction with their stay at the Ametyst Hostel in Poland, detailing the substandard conditions, but manages to find enjoyment in local sightseeing and food.

Abstract

The traveler, accustomed to decent accommodations, finds themselves in a hostel they describe as the worst, with issues ranging from cleanliness to comfort and facilities, including unreliable wifi. Despite being overbooked elsewhere, the traveler is not offered the private dorm out of generosity but rather due to the hostel's poor reputation, which is underscored by the presence of inebriated older Polish men in the common areas. However, the traveler makes the best of their situation by exploring local churches, the castle, and enjoying Polish cuisine, purchasing a souvenir to commemorate their time in Poland. They avoid using the communal kitchen, opting to consume purchased fruits and juices in their room, and plan to improve their experience the following day.

I Don’t Want an Old Polish Drunk in My Room

My luck really has taken a dive

Here’s the “view” from my window.

I’ve been put in the shittiest hostel known to man. Until now, I’ve booked my own accommodations and although some have been less than perfect, they’ve been pretty damn good.

Fast forward to last night. Read the story here.

I have a 4-bed dorm to myself but I’m paying for it. They’re not giving it to me out of generosity or feeling sorry for my plight. It was not my fault they were overbooked at the Sky Hostel.

And now that I’ve “settled in”, I know why they had a whole dorm vacant. Only the destitute and desperate would stay here. It has a low score for cleanliness, comfort, facilities and wifi. I just read the reviews.

It’s not just me. Other guests have reported random older Polish men in various stages of inebriation lounging around in the hallways. I’m so pleased my room has a lock on the door. Pity I have to go outside to use my not-so-private “private” toilet. Someone apart from me used it overnight!

I won’t be reviewing the Ametyst Hostel as I’m not even registered here as a guest! I don’t travel in fear but I wish I’d just walked to the nearest hotel to Greg & Tom’s last night and booked a room.

However, I had a pleasant enough day. I intended to wash my hair but the shower was too small. I showered and got out of there as quickly as I could. I tried not to look down. Eeew!

I had a breakfast of spinach-stuffed crepes with cheese sauce. I was pleasantly surprised. I really wanted eggs. They don’t have eggs. A cup of Earl Grey helped my digestion.

The spinach crepes and the little cafe under the hostel

To cheer myself, I caught a Bolt to the Pandora shop and bought a charm to remind me of the wonderful month I’ve had in Poland. (apart from last night) I then just started to wander the streets and found some churches and the Castle (wawel)

And around five, I ate a pistachio cannolo and a Greek yoghurt with muesli with a lovely latte.

My early dinner

I caught a Bolt back. Because it was peak hour, it cost me 14pln not 1100! I popped into the Carrefour Express downstairs and bought two juices, some grapes and bananas. I have them here in my room. I’d rather have them warm than to have to venture to the kitchen. Here are a few photos from this afternoon’s walk. In less than 2 km, I saw a lot!

This is the Castle as I walked past it.
Some churches. The last one is St Peter and Paul’s. The second last one is St Mary Magdalene’s.
These are from inside St Peter and Paul’s. No stained glass!
The beautiful organ. And there’s a tiny stained glass window pane up high.

You can probably tell I wasn’t feeling 100% taking these photos. I promise I’ll be better tomorrow.
