I Don’t Care about the Depp Vs Heard Trial

I’m having a hard time understanding the fascination

I’m going to be very honest and transparent in this article, no need to hide the truth… I haven’t watched a second of the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial. I could truthfully care less and have no interest in catching up on the scoop.

I know a couple of details here and there just because of the clips floating around on social media. Like Amber allegedly, according to the Twitter jury (insert obligatory and obvious take with a grain of salt warning here), doing a line of blow off her hand while on the stand. I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Or that Amber took a shit in Johnny's bed… I’ll admit that one got a chuckle out of me in a sick way. It’s just too absurd to even consider, what kind of person shits in someone's bed?

From some of the clips I’ve seen Johnny isn’t exactly a peach either, including his vulgar text messages toward Amber. Regardless if it was deserved behavior in the eyes of many it’s still not a great example to set. Doing drugs around your children isn’t a great look either. Which is why it appears the court both found them guilty of defamation, only Amber was the more egregious offender in the eyes of the public.

Perhaps it was deserved, again I keep leaving my opinion out of it because I really don’t have one. I’ve never seen any of Johnny or Amber's movies and I certainly don’t care about their domestic disputes.

So why do you care then?

Ah yes, a good question, my opinion comes from the way this trial has captivated the United States. I truthfully feel like I might be the only person in this country who doesn’t give a damn about this trial at times.

I’m having a hard time understanding how so many Americans are cheering on these celebrities of sub-par character like it's a sporting event, recording the trial on their televisions and listening on the road in their cars, but were totally mute on the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.

Look at the featured image of that NPR article… what do you notice?

It’s a fucking painting

We couldn’t even get a camera in that courtroom, god forbid, but Johnny Depp and Amber Heard can be broadcasted on multiple platforms at all hours of the day. The content machine was churning with creators cashing in on the hype of the trial.

The Maxwell trial on the other hand? The public couldn’t see what was going on in the courtroom, nothing to see here! And no one even questioned it or batted an eye.

A billionaire, whom no one knew how he got his fortune, was involved in an alleged child sex trafficking ring with major political players around the globe, where he kept a little black book full of names and addresses, who had a private island where he flew high profile figures on his jet where he logged their trips to the island, and on said island horrific acts of sexual violence took place on children.

We had redemption after the fishy circumstances surrounding Epstein's “suicide” to maybe get a crack at the truth of what lurks behind the curtain of evidence… but no one said anything.

The trial went without a peep of coverage, the media turned a blind eye and the public outrage was all but non-existent.

Ghislaine got a slap on the wrist considering what she might know. Here we have a smoking gun to perhaps a global child sex trafficking ring, where the most powerful people in the world quite literally abuse the most harmless people in the world, for shits and giggles.

Could it be false and all a giant coincidence? Sure, but I doubt it. The point is, we probably will never even know because it was brushed under the rug and we couldn’t care less to chase the truth.

Imagine if that trial had the public support behind it as the Depp trial did?

That’s not the only thing I’m frustrated about today as I write this. It frustrates me how easily we can be distracted by trivial nonsense. Perhaps in a different time period or in a vacuum, this trial would be appealing to me. But I can’t pretend to be amused by this trial when we are surrounded by pressing, crippling issues in this country.

Issues like rising inflation and a looming recession.

Violent crime and mass shootings are on the rise in virtually every part of the country

Political division is on the verge of a boiling point

Big government expanding

A raging opioid crisis with no end in sight

The life expectancy dropping with deaths of despair on the rise

I get it, these things are scary and hard to think about. But ignorance isn’t bliss and ignoring these very real issues doesn’t make them go away. It just makes them worse, until one of those issues begins to suffocate and end your life. Ignoring these things will only bring more pain and suffering upon us. We need a collective wake-up call in this country to the important issues and we need serious people ready to lead the way and lead the conversation. We need conversations. We need to focus. We need to look inward.

I also understand maybe this trial was an escape to some from the constant negative news cycle, and I’m sure this trial had a lot of actual news value. I just feel that the value we have put on it as a society is disproportionate to other more pressing issues that deserve our attention.

What do you think? Am I being too cynical and negative? Or do I have a point?
